I will preface my comments that the vacation was wonderful. We had a great time and any criticisms are simply open and honest feedback.

• The Ship - The ship itself was awesome. There were several "neighborhoods" so despite its size, it was actually easy to figure out where everything was. Central Park, with its trees and flowers and plants was a relaxing place to visit. The kids loved the carousel and the boardwalk. Royal Promenade was a easy and fun place to meet up. The only disappointment is that it was almost identical to the Oasis, so I felt like I was on the same ship two times in a row.
• The cabin - We booked an 11th deck ocean-view balcony. The room of course was small, but worked for our family of three. The bathroom was surprisingly spacious with plenty of room for us to unpack all of our toiletries. The balcony was a great size. I never felt like "Oh my god this room is tiny."
• The food - This is where it goes downhill. The food was just okay. We did not do any specialty dining. I have on a previous cruise but we did not on this one. I don't think you should have to pay extra to receive good food.
  • Breakfast: The best breakfast was Johnny Rockets. It is free for breakfast only. We went there three times. The dining room was awful. The Windjammer buffet was awful as well.
  • Lunch: Sorrento's pizza was pretty good. Windjammer was gross. (We typically do not like buffets). The food was cold, old, and just did not have much flavor. The dining room had a a decent selection. The Central Park Cafe actually had a good lunch (make your own salad, roast beef sandwiches) but had almost the exact same menu every day. Solarium Bistro had a decent buffet.
  • Dinner: We ate at the main dining room every single night. It was hit or miss. Most nights I ordered two appetizers and some nights I ordered two entrees. Most items were good. Out of the seven nights, I think I only had two entrees that I would classify as very good or excellent. I ordered roasted duck one night and it was awful. I could tell it was very old. Our service in the main dining room was excellent, though.
  • Other thoughts: Royal has seemed to have shifted their emphasis to specialty dining. I really dislike this. The cruise is already expensive enough as it is, I don't feel like you should have to pay extra to get a great meal.
• The bars - We did get the Ultimate alcoholic drink package. We certainly got our money's worth but it was challenging at times. The pool bars were typically very busy. It would take 10+ minutes to get a drink sometimes. I found myself settling for the beer cart because it was fast (however I would have rather had a cocktail). Disappointed that all of their drinks are made from mixes. Frozen drinks were never blended with the liquor so they always had to be stirred very well before drinking. Aside from the pools, drinks were easy to come by at other bars. However, I feel like their computer systems make it so difficult for them to complete a transaction. For example if I ordered a drink and a bottle of water, they would have to do two separate transactions, which really holds up the line. I paid $5 for a wrist band, but they only had one transmitter for the bands that was usually on the other end of the bar so I had to either take my band off or give them my card anyway. Kind of defeated the purpose.EDIT: Forgot to talk about Bionic Bar! Bionic Bar is amazing. There was surprisingly almost no wait to order a drink there. We were there almost every day. The signature drinks they suggest were pretty good... but I liked making my own drink. You can even name it whatever you want and it'll show up on the screen. The Ultimate Drink package works at this bar too. I recommend checking this out.
• The shows - I am not a big musical guy. I absolutely hated Cats on the Oasis. The Harmony's headliner show is Grease. I actually thought it was decent. Good production value. The rest of my party enjoyed it. The Fine Line Aqua show was actually one of the highlights of the trip. It was so good that we went to see it twice. The daytime aqua show, Hideaway Heist, was just okay. I wouldn't say it's worth missing out on quality pool time to go see.
• The pools / slides - There were three main pools. They were all standard cruise ship pool size. Relatively small. Full of kid's swimming around and adults standing/sitting and drinking. We managed to get a chair every day we were there, but it did take some looking some days. The water slides were great. On sea days the lines were pretty long during mid-day. During port days, even after everybody got back on, lines were reasonable. Two of the slides are the same and the third slide is a "toilet bowl" style slide. The latter was more popular and even if there was a line, you could usually bypass most of the line because it was made of people waiting for the third slide. The kid's pool area was okay. My daughter is 4 years old. The height requirement for the small kid's slide in Splashaway Bay is 42 inches, which I think is a bit steep. They would not let her go down. I understand there has to be a line somewhere, I just think 42 inches is too high. 36 inches would have been safe, for sure. These slides are SMALL.
• Adventure Ocean (Kid's Area) - My daughter, 4 years old, said it was boring. She typically loves going to day care, so I believe her when she says it was boring. Looking in the room, there didn't seem to be much to do.
• Casino - Casino is nice and large. Lots of tables and slot machines. The machines are from my experience, the tightest at sea. DO NOT PLAY THE SLOT MACHINES. They will absolutely rob you blind (even more so than slots normally do). I have always done well at slot machines at sea. Actually netted +$1,000 on my last two cruises from slots. Not on this one. I did enjoy playing blackjack and almost won back what I lost on slots.
• Nightlife - Some of the bars (particularly in Royal Promenade) die down kind of early, around midnight. The Attic nightclub stayed open late. The DJ was pretty good. We are in our 30s and didn't feel out of place either.
• Events - Not a ton of interesting daytime events. We went to trivia a couple of times and thought it was poorly ran. There was even an instance when the answer to the question was absolutely wrong. Several people pointed it out and we got an "oh well" type of response. The prizes are lame (A highlighter or a keychain). Some of the nighttime event's are cool. The 90s party was nice. We went to the Battle of the Sexes show and it was entertaining. Some members of our party went to Quest and Love & Marriage. They enjoyed both.
• Other - We always enjoy going to the art auctions. It's always free champagne, and we get to see lots of cool art, and sometimes we buy something. We did NOT enjoy the art auctions on the ship. We only went to one. They literally stopped serving champagne after everybody got one. The auctioneer was not particularly exciting or engaging. It wasn't what I expected.
• Service Staff - The overall feeling is that they were understaffed. There were often bars that simply didn't have any staff or things that were not open. This was during sea days. Very surprised by this. The staff that were working were all very kind. I just don't feel like there were enough of them.

Overall a great vacation! I always like to reflect back on the pros and the cons. Feel free to ask me any questions.

Hello travel !
My wife and I have been scouring our available resources to understand beach vacations. We weren't sure if we were going to road trip the US, go warm, or head to the mountains, but after looking into it we want to kick our feet up and have some well prepared meals instead of filling up on Mac Dons on the way to the next national park.
We are traveling March 23rd to April 2nd of 2018. Our budget is around $3,500 USD, give or take a couple hundred because we have quite a few credit card miles saved up for plane tickets. Also, we are willing to sacrifice a night or two to get into a better resort.
Initially, I was leaning toward something like the Maldives or Tahiti. Pretty ideal for what we wanted in a honeymoon. Except the fact that its on the other side of the world, 24 hour flight, and over $2000/ticket/person.
So I dug into this subreddit to find 'Maldives like' resorts in the Caribbean, but it seams that hurricanes make sure that's not a possibility. Unless you're paying upwards of $1500/night.
Like I stated; we are from the upper MidWest USA. Early 20's. We're fairly active people. Given our age, we none of our friends have embarked on this adventure to reference from or get direct suggestions.
What we're looking for in a resort:
-All-inclusive including alcohol: we would just like to not worry about how much every drink or meal costs while were there albeit the al a cart restaurants that we would like to partake in.
-Privacy/intimate: preferably adults only and not hotel/casino/club party vibe like Cancun or Puerto Villarda. It's a honeymoon after all. We want to relax and be able to enjoy each other's company without having screaming kids at the pool. Really liked the over-water bungalow vibe in the south pacific, or even beach villa, but I realize that isn't within our budget in the Caribbean.
-Younger crowd: we've been told to avoid resorts like Sandals because it attracts older couples. We are not really party goers, but we would like to be entertained in the after-dinner hours and maybe befriend some other couples on our vacation.
-Beach: I have looked into some resorts along the west and east coast of Mexico/central America (--talking like Bocos del Toro area) and they don't always have the nicest sand/water even compared to most Caribbean Islands. We started our search at the Maldives so our expectations are a little high I guess, but what ever is realistically nice.
-Activities and Amenities: we have never been on a beach vacation, but I have been on a cruise and I just want plenty of things to keep us entertained throughout the day. Excursions, fishing, surfing, paddle boarding, golfing, volleyball, pool (swim up bar? :), hot tub, spa, and snorkeling come to mind.
-American Cuisine: I will try just about anything and love seafood, but my wife is a fairly picky eater so we need to make sure the resort is developed enough to offer typical menu options.
-Service: Last summer I took an Alaskan cruise on Royal Caribbean and the service was pretty top notch; so my expectations are set pretty high. As far as i can see on reviews, high level of service seems to be a common theme, so I'm not too anxious, but I will take into account multiple bad experiences or poor facilities.
I have looked into a lot of options. A good number of the ones that fit the bill are just out of reach or, on the other side, well with in the budget but are just a bland, middle of the road, resort and casino for the fat american to get there beach on for a week. Jade Mountain on St. Lucia looks incredible, but alas I digress.
Realistically; -Couples - Tower Isle, Jamaica looks like a good fit. -Jamaica Jewel Resort possibly? -Anyone have any input on the Excellence resorts? We also have a Costco membership so we could book anything through costcotravel.com within budget.
Looking for references on resorts that fit the bill! Toss suggestions out! or give an uneducated good ole Midwestern boy a lesson or two about what to expect when vacationing in the Caribbean get a lost couple into a kick-ass honeymoon!

Open Streets: 11AM-3PM July 9th at Downtown Fort Wayne. Open Streets Fort Wayne will temporarily close the street to vehicles and open it to walkers, bike riders, roller skaters and fun activities such as giant inflatable games for kids. The event will allow residents to see Fort Wayne in a unique way, get some exercise and socialize with new and old friends. This year’s Open Streets Fort Wayne connects the neighborhoods of West Central, East Central, LaRez, Hoagland Masterson and Williams Woodland with the Central Business District on Calhoun Street. The event area goes from the St. Marys River south on Calhoun to Williams Street. In between there are activities that connect Berry, Wayne, Ewing and Barr Streets. Open Streets is family-friendly and free for everyone. Beginning Birding Program: 9-1030AM Saturdays through July 29th at the Great Marsh Trail parking lot. Join a ranger and fellow birding enthusiasts every Saturday morning. No birding experience is required. A spotting scope and binoculars will be provided. The program will start at the southern gravel parking lot followed by a short hike to the Great Marsh observation deck to look for herons, egrets, ducks and other birds of the marsh. If you arrive late, simply hike to the observation deck to join the vent. The hike will be offered every Saturday in July.

Mount Baldy Hike: 10-1130AM Sundays July 2-30 at Indiana Dunes Visitor Center. Join a ranger for a special guided morning hike along a trail on the western edge to the top of famous Mount Baldy. Even though the area is closed for general public access, this ranger-led tour allows visitors to experience the beauty and spectacular views from the tallest dune in the national lakeshore. This hike will be offered every Sunday in July. You must pre-register for the tour by calling 219-395-1882.

Walk the beautiful tree lined streets of Historic Downtown Auburn and enjoy 20 Wooden Wine Barrels transformed into unique works of art by local and regional artists. This outdoor walking tour exhibit is juried with awards and art auction held each year at the end of summer. This annual exhibit has included many different art objects over the past eight years, from giant paintings on easels to garden benches. Hello weddingplanning !
My wife and I have been scouring our available resources to understand beach vacations. We weren't sure if we were going to road trip the US, go warm, or head to the mountains, but after looking into it we want to kick our feet up and have some well prepared meals instead of filling up on Mac Dons on the way to the next national park.
We are traveling March 23rd to April 2nd of 2018. Our budget is around $3,500 USD, give or take a couple hundred because we have quite a few credit card miles saved up for plane tickets. Also, we are willing to sacrifice a night or two to get into a better resort.
Initially, I was leaning toward something like the Maldives or Tahiti. Pretty ideal for what we wanted in a honeymoon. Except the fact that its on the other side of the world, 24 hour flight, and over $2000/ticket/person.
So I dug into other subreddits to find 'Maldives like' resorts in the Caribbean, but it seams that hurricanes make sure that's not a possibility. Unless you're paying upwards of $1500/night.
Like I stated; we are from the upper MidWest USA. Early 20's. We're fairly active people. Given our age, none of our friends have embarked on this adventure to reference from or get direct suggestions.
What we're looking for in a resort:
-All-inclusive including alcohol: we would just like to not worry about how much every drink or meal costs while were there albeit the al a cart restaurants that we would like to partake in.
-Privacy/intimate: preferably adults only and not hotel/casino/club party vibe like Cancun or Puerto Villarda. It's a honeymoon after all. We want to relax and be able to enjoy each other's company without having screaming kids at the pool. Really liked the over-water bungalow vibe in the south pacific, or even beach villa, but I realize that isn't within our budget in the Caribbean.
-Younger crowd: we've been told to avoid resorts like Sandals because it attracts older couples. We are not really party goers, but we would like to be entertained in the after-dinner hours and maybe befriend some other couples on our vacation.
-Beach: I have looked into some resorts along the west and east coast of Mexico/central America (--talking like Bocos del Toro area) and they don't always have the nicest sand/water even compared to most Caribbean Islands. We started our search at the Maldives so our expectations are a little high I guess, but what ever is realistically nice.
-Activities and Amenities: we have never been on a beach vacation, but I have been on a cruise and I just want plenty of things to keep us entertained throughout the day. Excursions, fishing, surfing, paddle boarding, golfing, volleyball, pool (swim up bar? :), hot tub, spa, and snorkeling come to mind.
-American Cuisine: I will try just about anything and love seafood, but my wife is a fairly picky eater so we need to make sure the resort is developed enough to offer typical menu options.
-Service: Last summer I took an Alaskan cruise on Royal Caribbean and the service was pretty top notch; so my expectations are set pretty high. As far as i can see on reviews, high level of service seems to be a common theme, so I'm not too anxious, but I will take into account multiple bad experiences or poor facilities.
I have looked into a lot of options. A good number of the ones that fit the bill are just out of reach, or on the other side--well with in the budget, but are just a bland, middle of the road, hotel and casinos. Jade Mountain on St. Lucia looks incredible, but alas I digress.
Realistically; -Couples - Tower Isle, Jamaica looks like a good fit. -Jamaica Jewel Resort possibly? -Anyone have any input on the Excellence resorts?
We also have a Costco membership so we could book anything through costcotravel.com within budget. Looking for references on resorts that fit the bill! Toss suggestions out! or give an uneducated good ole Midwestern boy a lesson or two about what to expect when vacationing in the Caribbean get a lost couple into a kick-ass honeymoon!
