Spoiler Alert: the results of the 2020-21 NBA Season

Some fans (like myself) loathe reading "spoilers" for their favorite TV shows or movies. Others actively seek them out.
One of the best parts of being a sports fan is that it's impossible to look ahead and know the outcome of the season. However, I happened to stumble upon a Sports Almanac and will divulge the results for you now. Of course, if you're prefer not to know what happens this year, skip this post and be surprised instead.
EASTERN CONFERENCE
(1) Milwaukee Bucks : 50-22
With the news of Giannis Antetokounmpo's extensions serving as an early Christmas present, the Bucks roll into the year with good vibes and another dominant regular season run. Their new supporting takes some time to gel which leads to some more close games, but in turn that causes Giannis Antetokounmpo to play more minutes and put up better raw stats than ever (averaging 30 PPG for the first time in his career). Despite that, he's not a runaway MVP winner. Some voter fatigue and playoff backlash causes a split vote, with 5 different players receiving first-place voters. When the smoke clears and the dust settles, Giannis wins a close vote to snag his third consecutive MVP trophy.
(2) Brooklyn Nets : 47-25
The Brooklyn Nets click together early, fueled by a healthy-looking Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. They race out to a 30-11 start to the regular season before taking their foot off the gas to help sustain their health. While that decision may help them in the long run, it costs Kevin Durant his early-season MVP buzz (similar to Kawhi Leonard's season in Toronto.) Still, the Nets enter the postseason with good vibes all around, which earns coach Steve Nash several laudatory media reports and nearly enables him to win Coach of the Year (he finishes second.)
(3) Philadelphia 76ers : 46-26
Speaking of great press, new exec Daryl Morey receives plenty of glowing reviews himself after his tweaks to the roster work wonders. Thanks to the spacing of Seth Curry, Shake Milton, and surprise rookie Isaiah Joe, slashepasser Ben Simmons takes a leap up in efficiency, scoring a career-high 23 points a game and earning 2nd team All-NBA honors. Inside the locker room, it feels like there's a notable shift towards the roster being more of his team than Joel Embiid's. Of course, the club knows they'll need both of them to dominant to make a Finals push.
(4) Toronto Raptors : 45-27
Reigning Coach of the Year Nick Nurse doesn't get half as much recognition as he should for another strong year at the helm, helping the club to easily beat their Vegas oveunder of 41.5 wins. Still, there are cracks under the surface. Now at age 34/35, Kyle Lowry looks like he's lost a step and struggles to match his 36 minutes per game from the prior year. Although nothing is official yet, it looks like the team may have to say goodbye to Lowry at the end of the season as he enters free agency.
(5) Miami Heat : 44-28
The Miami heat don't ride their momentum from the Finals trip into a top seed, partly due to some leaky defense on the perimeter. Frustrated, Pat Riley decides to make a power move and trade for Victor Oladipo. The fit doesn't click right away as the team retains a similar record, but the Heat still feel confident that they can turn up the volume when the playoffs roll around.
(6) Boston Celtics : 43-29
After losing Gordon Hayward, the Boston Celtics' ascent up the Eastern Conference stagnates. For the first time, the media appears to turn on this likable coach and club, wondering if the team needs to make a dramatic trade to shake up the roster. Ultimately, they decide to hold on to Jaylen Brown and the core and take their chances in the playoffs with the current lineup.
(7) Indiana Pacers : 38-34
The Indiana Pacers attempt to shift their playing style under new coach Nate Bjorkgren, but some up and down play leads them to make a move and (as mentioned) trade Victor Oladipo prior to his free agency. Afterwards, they play more minutes with PG Aaron Holiday and PG/SG Malcolm Brogdon in the same lineup, a look that leads to a faster paced offense more befitting of Bjorkgren's ultimate goal for the team. That said, the decision about the future of the Myles TurneDomatas Sabonis pairing looms in the background.
(8) Atlanta Hawks : 35-37
All the moves the Atlanta Hawks made during the offseason pay off -- more or less -- as Danilo Gallinari and Bogdan Bogdanovic give Trae Young some much needed help. A year after finishing 26th in total offense, the team leaps up into the top half of the league. Still, struggles on defense keep the team below .500 on the year and lead to a dogfight all year long for that 8th seed.
(9) Washington Wizards : 34-38
New PG Russell Westbrook earns rave reviews from his teammates and from the press early on, as the club jumps out to a 12-8 record and a presumptive playoff spot thanks to a renewed effort and attitude. Ultimately, their poor defense (ranked 30th last season) and their young frontcourt lead to a few too many losses along the way and prevent them from clinching a playoff spot outright. Coach Scott Brooks is let go after the season in favor of Denver assistant Wes Unseld Jr.
(10) Charlotte Hornets : 30-42
The Charlotte Hornets' maligned signing of Gordon Hayward doesn't look too bad (in year 1) as Hayward returns to near All-Star levels with averages of 18-6-5. Still, the youth on the roster cripples any chance of a true playoff finish. At the same time, the future looks brighter than before. LaMelo Ball wins a polarizing Rookie of the Year campaign with good raw stats (15-5-7) on bad efficiency, while R2 pick Vernon Carey flirts with All-Rookie team for a solid 11-7 first year as a scoring big off the bench.
(11) Chicago Bulls : 28-44
One year after winning Coach of the Year for mixing the perfect cocktail in Oklahoma City, Billy Donovan doesn't find the same type of immediate success with the young pieces here in Chicago. Rookie Patrick Williams looks promising, but second year guard Coby White shows more inconsistency than expected in his sophomore campaign.
(12) Orlando Magic : 28-44
Despite the losses of Jonathan Isaac (injury) and D.J. Augustin (free agency), coach Steve Clifford keeps his team in the playoff mix for the first few months of the season. But once the team stumbles during a 1-5 stretch, the front office decides to wave the white flag and trade Aaron Gordon. For them, the purposes are twofold: to give more opportunity to rookie PF Chuma Okeke, and to eye a higher draft pick in a strong class. With that rebuild in mind, the team decides to empower rookie PG Cole Anthony over the last few month, indicating that free agent Markelle Fultz may not be in their future plans after all.
(13) Detroit Pistons : 25-47
Returning from injury, Blake Griffin flashes the All-NBA caliber talent that he displayed two years ago when he led the team to a 41-41 record. However, Griffin continues to miss time here and there, effectively ending the team's chances of being a true playoff contender. The limited spacing also reveals itself, as the team struggles mightily to score in the games Griffin misses (finishing 8-19 without him.)
(14) New York Knicks : 24-48
Hard-charging coach Tom Thibodeau pushes the Knicks too much for them to garner the top spot in the NBA Draft, but they still manage to finish in the bottom 5. For all the early Rookie of the Year buzz for Obi Toppin, he fails to win the award due to Thibodeau overplaying Julius Randle and Toppin's own bad stats on defense.
(15) Cleveland Cavaliers : 21-51
The undersized perimeter leads to an awful defense that leaves the Cavaliers among the worst in the league yet again. The team attempts to trade Kevin Love to a contender, but an injury complicates that timeline and leads to an offseason exit for the big man instead.
WESTERN CONFERENCE
(1) Los Angeles Clippers : 48-24
After their embarrassing flameout against Denver, the L.A. Clippers come back with a chip on their shoulder and an eagerness to change the narrative about them. Their regular season play remains similar (top 5 in offense and defense), but comes with more effort and chemistry as a unit. By the time the season ends, they've gotten right back to the level of the Lakers in terms of title odds (+270).
(2) Los Angeles Lakers : 47-25
Unlike their cross-town rival (or rather, same-stadium rival), the L.A. Lakers don't feel the need to drive hard in the regular season after winning the title. LeBron James drastically reduces his workload in the regular season, going from 34.6 minutes a night down to 33.5. In the process, the Lakers lose their grip on the # 1 seed and LeBron James' loses his argument for another MVP. But as the playoffs approach, they don't seem to mind at all; they're still the betting favorite to win the title in Vegas.
(3) Utah Jazz : 44-28
After a full year in the system, PG Mike Conley's struggles are behind him and he helps the team threaten for the # 1 seed. Returning big man Derrick Favors helps the depth and helps the defense return to the top 8 (after falling to 13th last year), and wing Royce O'Neale finally gets some credit for that as well, finishing on the All-Defense team.
(4) Denver Nuggets : 43-29
While the Utah Jazz thrive because of their defense, Denver disappoints because of a declining one. Michael Porter Jr. looks like a future All-Star with averages of 16.7 points per game, but his struggles on the other end (in contrast to Jerami Grant) lead the Nuggets to finish in the bottom half of the league on D and prevent them from the presumptive step up that many expect.
(5) Dallas Mavericks : 41-31
Luka Doncic and company look as good as ever, but their returns demand on expectations. Luka Doncic puts up MVP-caliber stats, but doesn't actually win it (losing to Giannis.) The historically good offense takes a dip as the team realizes how much they miss Seth Curry. In his place, Josh Richardson underwhelms for his second straight team.
(6) New Orleans Pelicans : 38-34
After getting a lot of flak and a lot of flab, Zion Williams looks rejuvenated early on and the hype about him returns quickly. New coach Stan Van Gundy settles on rotations faster than Alvin Gentry did, and trusts his former player J.J. Redick more than Gentry did as well. Redick and Steven Adams' veteran leadership helps the youngsters play hard and fast every night, leading to a playoff spot despite inconsistent shooting as a team. Van Gundy wins Coach of the Year for the unexpected playoff trip and high seed.
(7) Portland Trail Blazers : 37-35
Despite a lot of good will and public support (including a projected # 2 seed from ESPN's Bobby Marks), Portland looks like the same ol' Blazers again with strong offense and poor defense. The feel-good Carmelo Anthony storyline ends poorly. Coach Terry Stotts shelves Anthony towards the second half of the season (due to poor defensive numbers), leading Anthony to bristle and ultimately work out a buy-out with the team.
(8) Phoenix Suns : 37-35
The Phoenix Suns officially turn the corner and become a winning team. Still, there's a stark contrast between their play with Chris Paul and without Chris Paul. And unfortunately for them, Paul's not as healthy as he had been the year before for OKC. He ends up missing 24 games, during which the Suns go 10-14.
(9) Houston Rockets : 36-36
The Houston Rockets play hardball and push the Philadelphia 76ers for a James Harden-Ben Simmons trade, but Daryl Morey and the Rockets stonewall them (feeling no time crunch, given that their stars are both young and on long-term deals.) Fortunately for the Rockets, James Harden sucks it up, starts the year in a Rocket uniform, and immediately looks like an MVP contender again with his incredible workload and efficiency. Alas, his new backcourt mate John Wall doesn't look quite at the same level in his first year back. Wall's struggles hurt the team's ceiling, and ultimately cast a dark cloud over their future (with Wall owed over $40M in each of the next 3 years.) The Harden trade may have been avoided for now, but still looks likely in the offseason.
(10) Golden State Warriors : 34-38
Returning star Steph Curry flashes the talent that made him a two-time MVP for stretches, but minor injuries keep derailing the momentum he has for an MVP push and for a playoff push for the team. Draymond Green doesn't snap back to prime form as many Warriors fans had hoped, leaving some doubt about his future with the club. Fortunately, rookie C James Wiseman steadily improves and looks like a future stud. Unfortunately, it won't be good enough to help the team for this season.
(11) Sacramento Kings: 32-40
The bad buzz about the Sacramento Kings turns around as a healthy De'Aaron Fox and Marvin Bagley III jumpstart an improvement from the year before. In fact, Bagley flirts with 20-10 averages, finishing just shy with 18.8 points per game. As a combo guard off the bench, Tyrese Haliburton is one of the most effective rookies in the class. Savvy analysts like Kevin Pelton push for him to win Rookie of the Year, but his limited minutes and counting stats leave him snubbed for the trophy.
(12) San Antonio Spurs : 31-41
The San Antonio Spurs get out to a strong 14-12 start thanks to an improved defense (and a lack of Bryn Forbes), leading many to campaign for Gregg Popovich as a potential Coach of the Year. Eventually the team lags behind in the crowded Western Conference and turns the reins over to the youngsters. DeMar DeRozan gets reduced time down the stretch as the team gets an extended look at Keldon Johnson and Devin Vassell as the potential wings of the future.
(13) Minnesota Timberwolves : 29-43
Karl-Anthony Towns continues his blistering pace from three, but doubt lingers about the roster construction beyond that as the next best players (D'Angelo Russell, Anthony Edwards, and Malik Beasley) all look like scoring guards. Among them, Beasley appears to be the odd man out, leading to a trade to Orlando in a package that yields back Aaron Gordon. Gordon helps the team's defense, but not in time to make a playoff push for this particular year.
(14) Memphis Grizzlies : 27-45
After a disappointing start to the season, the Grizzlies see no rush to bring back Jaren Jackson Jr. for heavy minutes. Instead, they try to find the right supporting players for the long haul. To that end, PF Brandon Clarke confirms his strong rookie season was no fluke, setting himself up for starters' minutes next season (with the idea being that they'll shift Jaren Jackson to the center position full time as well.)
(15) Oklahoma City Thunder : 18-54
Sam Presti and new coach Mark Daigneault work in tandem to help secure a top lottery pick for the club. Thanks to newly expanded rosters, the Thunder team looks even more anonymous than the Hinkie Sixers by the end, playing the equivalent of G-Leaguers for the last few weeks of the season. While OKC lands the top slot going into the lottery, they end up with the # 3 pick and miss out on the chance to draft local product Cade Cunningham. Still, it may be a blessing in disguise, as other top prospects SG Jalen Green and C Evan Mobley project to be good complements to foundational piece Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
EASTERN CONFERENCE PLAYOFFS
PLAY-IN GAMES
The Charlotte Hornets earn some buzz (get it??) and some predictions that they'll knock off the Indiana Pacers, but the Pacers handle their business and win 1-0. Meanwhile, the 8th-9th series between Atlanta and Washington is a dogfight. Russell Westbrook helps the Wizards win Game 1 with a 23-9-11 line, but he goes an ugly 7-23 in the second game as the Hawks win out.
ROUND ONE
(1) Milwaukee vs. (8) Atlanta
Atlanta's momentum is short-lived, as Giannis Antetounkoumpo and company crush them like bugs, 4-1.
(2) Brooklyn vs. (7) Indiana
Indiana fights harder than expected and manages to tie the series 2-2, but Kyrie Irving has a massive game 5 (43 points) and helps lead to a 4-2 win.
(3) Philadelphia vs. (6) Boston
Forget tough series -- this is an all-out war. Doc Rivers battles against his old team, and has an ace up his sleeve in the mammoth Joel Embiid whose size causes fits for the Celtics. With better shooting around him this time, it's enough to knock off the Celts, 4-3.
(4) Toronto vs. (5) Miami
Another great R1 series goes to the wire in Game 7. The Raptors' length bothers Jimmy Butler inside, but Miami's shooters provide enough of a pop to pull it out, 4-3.
ROUND TWO
(1) Milwaukee vs. (5) Miami
Milwaukee needs to exercise their demons from last year, facing the time that knocked them off. This time around, Giannis is fully healthy and paired with a big-time playoff competitor in Jrue Holiday, who helps provide the difference as the Bucks win 4-2. At this point, many analysts feel like this will be "Giannis' year."
(2) Brooklyn vs. (3) Philadelphia
In another high-profile clash, coaches Steve Nash and Doc Rivers receive a lot of spotlight for their star-studded teams. Unfortunately, Rivers has no answer in the bank for Kevin Durant, who averages 34.8 points en route to a 4-2 victory.
ROUND THREE
(1) Milwaukee vs. (2) Brooklyn
All year long, it looks like Milwaukee may have shaken off their playoff troubles and finally achieved their destiny. However, after a 2-1 lead, the tide starts to turn. Jarrett Allen and Kevin Durant's length helps limit Giannis to a mediocre series, allowing the Nets to rattle off 3 straight wins and make the Finals.
WESTERN CONFERENCE PLAYOFFS
PLAY-IN GAMES
A play-in series between former teammates James Harden and Chris Paul favors CP3 and his supporting cast, as the Suns officially cement their playoff spot. While Steph Curry and the Warriors haven't had a strong year, they manage to steal game 1 from Portland thanks to 6 threes from Curry. However, Damian Lillard and the Blazers crank it up a notch and squeak by in Game 2 to advance.
(1) L.A. Clippers vs. (8) Phoenix
Chris Paul gives his former team fits, but ultimately the Clippers pull out a slugfest, 4-2.
(2) L.A. Lakers vs. (7) Portland
A rematch of last year's R1 series goes in a similar direction, as the Lakers crush the Blazers 4-1. Anthony Davis averages 31-15, causing many to cite him as a top 3 player overall and future MVP.
(3) Utah vs. (6) New Orleans
The surging New Orleans Pelicans are a trendy pick for an upset, but the Utah Jazz continue to play the role of sleeper well, utilizing their defense and Donovan Mitchell's scoring (29.3 per game) to a comfortable 4-2 victory.
(4) Denver vs. (5) Dallas
Luka Doncic goes bananas against a soft Denver defense, logging 37-14-8 in Game 1 and 42 points in Game 3. However, Denver manages to get the job done in a 4-3 series. After the series, talk swirls about whether the Mavericks may need a third star to take the next jump. Mark Cuban spends the offseason on rosetta stone learning Greek.
ROUND TWO
(1) L.A. Clippers vs. (4) Denver
Another rematch from last year, but one that doesn't lead to a repeat outcome. The Clippers are extremely motivated to put the Nuggets away when they have the chance, turning a 3-1 lead into a 4-1 victory this time.
(2) L.A. Lakers vs. (3) Utah
The plucky Utah Jazz give the favored Lakers everything they can handle and even take a 2-1 lead in the series. However, some big performances from LeBron James (and some questionable officiating) help the Lakers rally back to win three in a row and secure the ballyhooed showdown against the Clippers.
ROUND THREE
(1) L.A. Clippers vs. (2) L.A. Lakers
A must-see TV rematch between Kawhi Leonard and LeBron James comes down to the "Others," as new Clippers' SG Luke Kennard plays much better than Lakers' shooters KCP and Kyle Kuzma. When the dust settles, the Clippers pull it out 4-2. After the series, the Lakers cite a lingering wrist injury to Anthony Davis as a potential reason why they didn't look 100%.
NBA FINALS
(2) Brooklyn Nets vs. (1) L.A. Clippers
The NBA world misses out on a KD-LeBron series (or a Kyrie-LeBron series, depending on your perspective), but we still get an awesome matchup with other superstars like Durant and Kawhi Leonard. Leonard and Paul George bother KD to some degree, but the Nets' backcourt of Kyrie Irving and Joe Harris keeps their offense moving nonetheless. Irving has a few signature games (37 in Game 2, 31-9 in Game 5) compared to a quieter Paul George (15.8 PPG in the series) and helps the BROOKLYN NETS win the NBA CHAMPIONSHIP in a 4-2 win. KD wins a close vote for Finals MVP, but Irving and coach Steve Nash get a lot of credit as well.

[OC] Comparing LeBron and Jordan on Championship % in competitive seasons -- better context than 6-0 vs 4-6 (stats, figures, and analysis)

Comparisons of the Finals records of Jordan (6-0) and LeBron (4-6) suffer from the obvious problem that this metric has the absurd consequence of rewarding failure to make the Finals in non-title seasons. For instance, in 1989 Jordan's Bulls lost to the Pistons in the Eastern Conference Finals; if instead they managed to overcome the Pistons only to lose to the Lakers in the Finals, that would have been a more successful season for Jordan and the Bulls, even though his Finals record would now be “worse” at 6-1 rather than 6-0.
Still, there is a certain logic to the comparison. For players of GOAT stature, we want to know not only how often they were able to win the championship, but also how well they were able to seal the deal when playing on legitimate title contenders. Finals record is a coarse way of getting at this, but it's not ideal. Let's get some more context by looking at the question of LeBron vs Jordan's championship mettle from a number of different angles.
Champ %
To generalize the idea of Finals record, we can consider any season in which a player wins a title as a "Championship win" and any season in which they fail to win a title as a "Championship loss." Then the championship caliber of a player's career can be coarsely summarized by their Championship win-loss record and the corresponding Championship win %, or Champ % for short. This gives us:
Player # Seasons # Titles Champ W-L Champ %
LeBron 17 4 4 - 13 23.5%
Jordan 15 6 6 - 9 40.0 %
There is not a whole lot of nuance here, as raw Champ % doesn’t take into account that in some seasons, a player might have no realistic shot at the title due to poor roster construction, injuries, etc. Nonetheless, something remarkable already jumps out: LeBron’s efficiency at converting Finals appearances to titles thus far (40%) is identical to Jordan’s efficiency at converting any given season of his career to titles (40%), where this latter figure includes the non-contending seasons at the beginning of Jordan’s Bulls career as well as his two-year “for the love of the game” stint with the Wizards. Historically, with no context, LeBron’s chances of winning the title given that he makes it to the final round of the playoffs has been the same as Jordan’s chances of winning the title given that he suits up to play an NBA season.
Let’s narrow it down a bit by considering only seasons featuring playoff appearances. LeBron missed the playoffs his first two seasons in the league, as well as in his first season with the Lakers; Jordan never missed the playoffs in Chicago, but did miss them in both of his seasons with the Wizards.
Player # Playoff Seasons # Titles Champ W-L Champ % (Playoffs)
LeBron 14 4 4 - 10 28.6%
Jordan 13 6 6 - 7 46.2 %
This is my new favorite Jordan stat: in seasons where his team qualified for the playoffs (or equivalently, for his whole career ignoring the Wizards years), Jordan winning the title was almost a 50/50 proposition. Chicago Jordan had a better chance of winning the NBA championship than 7 NBA franchises have had of winning a regular season game (SAC, WAS, CHA, BRK, MEM, LAC, MIN). (The regular season win % of two further teams, CLE and NOP, is essentially identical to Jordan’s Champ % in playoff appearances.) LeBron’s conversion rate is nothing to sneeze at, but still falls well behind Jordan’s.
Champ % in title contending seasons (by SRS)
Making the playoffs is no guarantee that your team is a real threat to win it all. What if we only consider seasons in which the player’s team was a legitimate title contender? Champ % would then tell us something about how good the player is at closing the deal on the title given that they are legitimately within striking distance of doing so. But how do we tell whether a team is a legit contender?
There are many possible ways one could do this, but one very simple approach is to look at the SRS of NBA champions in the modern NBA to get a sense of how much regular season success a team typically needs to be a threat to win it all. SRS is short for “Simple Rating System”; it takes into account regular season margin of victory and strength of schedule to arrive at a measure of how many points better than average a team is.
Some summary statistics for the SRS of NBA champions from 1980 – 2020 (1980 being the season where the three point line was introduced) are as follows:
SRS of NBA champions, 1980 – 2020
Benchmark SRS cut-off
Minimum 2.32
5th percentile 3.67
25th percentile 5.41
Median 6.42
75th Percentile 8.33
95th Percentile 11.0
Maximum 11.8
The typical champion in the 3-point era has an SRS around 6.42. 95% of champions have had an SRS greater than 3.67, making this a conservative cut-off for the minimum bar a team needs to pass to have a shot at the title. (The 1995 Houston Rockets were an outlier, managing to win it all despite a weak regular season featuring 47 wins and a 2.32 SRS.)
We can now ask how effective LeBron and Jordan were at converting title contending potential into actual titles by considering Champ % for seasons in which their teams surpassed various SRS benchmarks exhibited by historical champions.
Table 4 - Champ % in contending seasons (by SRS)
Although the methodology here is a bit more sophisticated than just looking at Finals record (and thereby avoids the problems that Finals record suffers from as noted above), the message actually turns out to be much the same. In line with his mythical reputation, the numbers portray Jordan as an unbelievable championship closer. When he’s been on teams that had even a remote shot at winning the title based on their regular season performance, he’s just about been guaranteed to take them all the way to the promised land.
LeBron’s numbers here are quite strong, and indeed they are better than his 4-6 record in the Finals and its corresponding 40% Champ %. This is due to the fact that this methodology does not consider several of the teams LeBron dragged to the Finals to be strong title contenders (2007 CLE, 2017 CLE, 2018 CLE). The defending champ 2017 CLE is a bit of a surprise here—in the regular season, they were elite offensively (3rd) but poor defensively (21st), yielding an uninspiring 2.87 SRS. However, 2007 CLE and 2018 CLE make sense—even in real time, the consensus was that although it was impressive they managed to get to the Finals, neither ever had a realistic shot at defeating the best competition to win the title. That LeBron was able to drag these teams to the Finals is to his credit, but is also a reflection of some weak years in the Eastern Conference, which somewhat skews the number of Finals appearances he’s made.
Nonetheless, despite LeBron’s strong showing in title contending seasons, he still clearly and unambiguously falls short of Jordan’s near-impeccable brilliance. Consider:
• Jordan and LeBron have had a nearly identical number of seasons in which their team passed a low bar for being considered legit title contenders (surpassing the 5th percentile of historical champ SRS) at 8 and 9, respectively. Jordan was able to convert 75% of such opportunities (6-2), compared to LeBron’s 44% (4-5).
• Making the SRS cut-off just a bit more conservative at the 25th percentile, once again the number of opportunities are similar: 6 for Jordan, 7 for LeBron. But here Jordan’s Champ % is a perfect 100% (6-0) whereas LeBron is close to breaking even at 57% (4-3).
• Going up one notch further and considering only seasons where their teams surpassed the median champion SRS, we see a couple of interesting things happen: Jordan not only headlined more upper-tier contenders (5 vs LeBron’s 3), but once again he was impeccable in sealing the deal (5-0) whereas LeBron botched 2 of his 3 chances (1-3), these being 2009 CLE and 2011 MIA.
These patterns jump out more in a visual representation. Check out this figure:
Figure 1 - SRS of LeBron and Jordan seasons compared to historical champions
The left panel shows a histogram of the SRS of NBA champions since 1980. The two right panels reproduce this histogram and additionally show the single season SRSs of LeBron’s and Jordan’s teams, indicating which of these were championship seasons. In many ways, the spread of their team SRS is similar, with some bad and mediocre seasons intermingled with many seasons of solid title contention. What really stands out as separating Jordan from LeBron is:
• Jordan has led several historically elite championship team (SRS > 10), including three of the top four by SRS (the broken 2017 GSW being the only other team in the 3-point era to reach this stratosphere). Conversely, LeBron’s best teams have clustered closer to the level of the median NBA champion (SRS ~= 6.5) and never been higher than 8.7 (2009 CLE). This is in spite of LeBron’s having had three separate tries at constructing the ideal super team (with Wade/Bosh, Irving/Love, and now Anthony Davis).
• Jordan has never failed to win a title given a strong contender (SRS > 6), whereas LeBron has failed to do so 3 times in his career (2009 CLE, 2010 CLE, 2011 MIA). His loss in the 2011 Finals is infamous and rightly so, but his 2009 and 2010 CLE teams were of comparable strength going by SRS and so these also constitute failures to convert a strong chance at winning the title.
Here’s another visualization which tells much the same story:
Figure 2 - time course of SRS for LeBron and Jordan teams
This figure shows the SRS of Jordan’s and LeBron’s teams over time and indicates which of these were championship seasons. For historical comparison, it also plots the 5th, 25th, 50th (median), 75th, and 95th percentile of NBA champion regular season SRS. It’s a nice way of concretely visualizing what is becoming a bit of a cliché: when it comes to winning, Jordan’s peak is higher, and LeBron’s plateau is longer. But, in tandem with the previous figure, perhaps it does help to reinforce that their two peaks are not quite as close as some recent discussions have suggested. Jordan’s teams reached levels of success (as measures in Champ % and SRS) at a level clearly and definitively above LeBron’s. It’s not really that close.
Champ % in title contender seasons (by league win % rank)
The above analysis can be reproduced using league-wide rank in regular season Win % rather than SRS to derive historical benchmarks for what makes a team a legit title contender. The pattern of results with this method is much the same as what was described above:
Table 5 - Champ % in contending seasons (by league rank in Win %)
Conclusions
Although a simple comparison of Finals records is somewhat problematic, much the same conclusion is supported by a more nuanced approach: for as great a winner as LeBron has been, his career accomplishments in this regard are still a clear step below those of Jordan. This doesn’t reflect poorly on LeBron so much as it emphasizes how much of an outlier Jordan’s dominance is. Some take-aways from this analysis are:
Different standard bearers: Historically, LeBron’s chances of winning a title given that he makes the Finals are the same as Jordan’s chance of winning a title given that he plays an NBA season.
Similar number of legit shots at the title: Going by Finals record, it appears as though LeBron has had more legitimate chances at winning the title than Jordan (10 vs 6 Finals appearances), which maybe counts for something. But this doesn’t account for the occasional weakness of the Eastern Conference, or for failures to take strong title contenders to the Finals to begin with. When defining title contenders by strength of regular season performance compared to historical champions in the modern era, it turns out that Jordan and LeBron actually have had nearly identical numbers of chances to make legitimate plays for the title. This is true regardless of whether regular season success is defined by SRS or league rank in Win %, and regardless of the specific historical benchmark one chooses.
Unbridgeable chasm in sealing the deal: In those seasons in which they played for legitimate title contenders, Jordan’s odds of closing the deal and actually winning the title consistently far outstrip LeBron’s, with differences in their Champ % ranging from 30% - 67% depending on the details of how one defines a title contender.
Flawless vs flawed: Jordan was literally flawless when it came to closing for strong title contenders. He never, not once, failed to win the title when playing on a strong title contender (SRS > 6). His 6-0 Finals record is not marred by any seasons in which he failed to take a strong contender to the Finals to begin with. By contrast, LeBron failed to close the deal on a strong title contender (SRS > 6) three separate times (2009 CLE, 2010 CLE, 2011 MIA). In the two CLE seasons he failed to even reach the Finals.
Historically great title teams vs average title teams: Three of the top four regular season SRSs posted by NBA champions in the last 40 years, including the best of all time, belong to Jordan’s Bulls. The average SRS of his championship teams was 9.1, placing Jordan’s average title team in the 85th percentile of modern champions in terms of SRS. Conversely, LeBron’s single-season SRS peak (2009 CLE, SRS = 8.7) falls short of the average SRS of Jordan’s 6 championship teams (9.1). The average SRS of LeBron’s title teams is 6.1, which sits at the 41st percentile of modern era champs, i.e. the regular season performance of LeBron’s title teams have been slightly worse than the typical NBA champion in the 3-point era.
Sustained dominance vs irregular breakthroughs: With consecutive threepeats spaced two seasons apart, during which time he led some of the greatest teams of all time and never failed to seal the deal when leading a strong contender, Jordan terrorized and steamrolled the league for the better part of a decade. LeBron has never had a sustained run of dominance like this; his titles are more like irregularly spaced breakthroughs over spans of time during which he never quite achieves clear separation from the other top teams in the league.
Naturally, team success depends on the team as a whole as well as the level of competition, so it’s not entirely fair to compare individual players based on team performance. Yet imperfect and fraught as such analysis is, it’s a necessary exercise when comparing the career resumes of two of the greatest players of all time. Perhaps LeBron never quite had the perfect complement like Jordan’s Pippen. Wade and Bosh were supremely talented but somewhat awkward fits, and Irving and Love were All-Stars but not all-time greats. Anthony Davis figures as a Pippen-level sidekick in terms of both talent and fit, although this comes only at the twilight of LeBron’s career. Jordan’s legacy certainly benefits tremendously from luck. Yet, when luck put him within striking distance, he never failed to capitalize fully. We’d also be remiss to overlook the fact that the playing field of luck is leveled considerably by LeBron’s having leveraged his way into brand new superteams of his choosing on three separate occasions. In spite of this tremendous career-building advantage, LeBron’s championship pedigree still falls considerably short of Jordan’s.
LeBron and Jordan’s championship performance over their careers reminds me a bit of the team-level performances of the Tim Duncan Spurs and Steph Curry Warriors, respectively. The analogy isn’t perfect for a number of reasons, but if you squint, the outlines fit pretty well. LeBron is like the Tim Duncan Spurs; he sticks around playing at an absurdly high level seemingly forever, repeatedly getting written off (it’s about time for the decline to start setting in now, right?) and then once again proving the doubters wrong, never putting together a prolonged string of championship dominance across many consecutive seasons or having historically dominant single-season performances, but always being in the mix nonetheless and managing to produce titles here and there at irregular intervals. Jordan is like the Steph Curry Warriors; his run isn’t quite as prolonged but it burns as hot as the sun, yielding historically elite levels of performance, steamrolling the league for years at a time with an aura of dominance and inevitability, making the opposition feel like the game is over before it’s even begun.

This is a re-sim of NBA History. I play on PS4 and the furthest I could go back with a full roster and accurate historic draft classes was the beginning of the 1989-90 season. So I will start there and continue with historic draft classes until present day. From there I will keep adding future draft classes and when they run out I will continue with fictional created draft classes and see how many years I can go. I control all teams in the league so this will be more of a whole league look rather than one team. Also I am using a random event generator to add more storylines to the league. I got the idea from this thread

1992-1993
A) REGULAR SEASON (WEST) :
After pulling off a trade in the offseason to get Charles Barkley, the Lakers were the favorites heading into the season, but it was Seattle that once again ended up atop the West. The Supersonics once again led the way with their offense. Although Xavier Mcdaniel led the team in scoring, Shawn Kemp and Dana Barros put up career best numbers and Barros was moved into the starting lineup at the beginning of the year. While the top seed is nice, history has shown us that anything can happen with this team in the playoffs. The Utah Jazz were also fighting for that top seed. The defending conference champs finished better than they did last season as Karl Malone has become one of the most consistent offensive threats in the league. The Lakers performed a bit below expectations. Trading for Barkley has all but depleted the depth of the Lakers, so games against deep teams like the Sonics and Jazz are tough to win. They did have some great moments but the roster might one or two more moves before they can contend for a championship. San Antonio stepped up in the right direction this season as David Robinson once again bested his competition for best center of the league title. It comes at the right time too, as Robinson is set to be a free agent at the end of the season.

  13. Sacramento Kings
B) REGULAR SEASON (EAST) :
The Bulls ran away with the East this year, finishing almost 15 games ahead of the 2nd seed. Michael Jordan's dominance continues as he came very close to putting up the first ever 60-40-90 season in league history. He continues to put distance between him and his competition for GOAT of the sim. The Bulls had 2 different 20 game win streaks and posted the highest scoring average in the league for the first time in the sim. They do not even let Jordan get to his last year on his contract before extending him, signing him to the longest extension in league history. Elsewhere in the East the Knicks finally stepped out of the middle of the pack and finished as a clear cut second seed. This is a team that has not made many moves so far, just relying on the dominance of Ewing to get them to this point. He had stellar season with one notable exception. A Christmas game against the Miami Heat where rookie Shaquille O'Neal blocked Ewing's shot to tie the score at the end of the game. Shaq had an outstanding rookie season, winning rookie of the year and helping turn around the heat from one of the worst records to a playoff berth in one year narrowly beating out an improved Indiana Pacers squad. Boston and Detroit have finally started to show their age. They both dropped from where they had finished in years past. Both rosters are aging and they have not made many moves so they will have to change things up in the offseason to get back to fighting for the top of the East. The Philadelphia 76ers were not what they were the last couple of seasons without Barkley, but they were not a bad team either, making the playoffs behind the trio of James Worthy, Hersey Hawkins, and Terrell Brandon.

F) THE ALL-STAR GAME:
Team Jordan vs Team Malone
Notable moments: MJ scores 31 and wins MVP.
3pt contest winner: Isiah Thomas (Pistons) - Won on the final shot!
Dunk contest winner: Chris Gatling (Milwaukee)
G) THE PLAYOFFS (WEST) :
First round:
Seattle sweeps the Portland Trail Blazers. Xavier McDaniel had a notable game 2 where he hit back to back turnaround jumpers late in the game to tie and give Seattle the win.
The Lakers put their foot on the gas from the beginning of their series against Phoenix and swept them.
San Antonio dropped game 1 to the Clippers then beat them by double digits the next four games to advance.
The Rockets were hurting before the series started after losing Hakeem for most of the year with a broken leg. They barely scraped their way to the 7th seed and could not do much against to score against the best defense in the league. Utah advanced in four.
Conference semi-finals:
After a trio of dissapointing exits, Seattle might be in their own heads more than they are the opponents. That may explain why they were never able to put away the Lakers this series. With the series on the line in game three the Lakers mounted a big comeback in the fourth quarter led by Magic Johnson. That game changed the momentum in the series as the Lakers took the next two after that and suddenly the Sonics were facing another early playoff exit. In the third quarter Charles Barkley took over the game scoring 16 points by himself. In the 4th quarter he and Magic combined to make up all but a few of the Lakers points and the Sonics were sent home without reaching the finals despite being the #1 seed for the fourth year in a row.
Karl Malone absolutely balled out this series averaging just over 30 points. While it was a 2/3 seed matchup, the Spurs could not match up with the depth of the Jazz. This game went 6 games and the Jazz advanced.
Conference Finals:
The Lakers had made an impressive run through the playoffs and it looked like they were on the verge of another big time run to the finals. Standing in their way was the Finals runner-ups from last year, The Utah Jazz. It was a battle of star power against team ball, a fast paced offense and the best scoring defense in the league, and a battle of the two best point guards and best power forwards in the league. In the beginning it looked like the Jazz would dominate cruising to two easy wins at home. The Lakers bounced back at home and took the next two. Magic took over the final minutes of game 4 scoring the last 8 points to get the series back even. Back in Utah for game 5, the duo of Stockton and Malone made two defensive plays late in the game. with the Jazz trailing by 1 Stockton stripped Magic on a drive to the rim. Then with the Jazz now leading Malone blocked Barkley and grabbed the rebound with less than a minute left to seal the win. Malone would save his best for last in this series. After game 6 went to overtime on a missed Barkley jumper at the end of regulation, the Jazz had the ball with less than 10 seconds left. After nearly turning over the inbounds pass Stockton caught Malone out of the corner of his eye and Malone hit the series ending jumper over Barkley as time expired to send the Jazz back to the Finals!
H) THE PLAYOFFS (EAST) :
First round:
The Bulls matched up with the Heat in the first round as the two biggest players in the league met for the first time in the playoffs in Jordan and Shaq. The Bulls took the first meeting in a sweep despite a solid showing from Shaq in his debut.
The Pistons faced off against the Celtics for what might be the last time for these versions of the teams. It was anticlimactic as the Pistons made quick work of Boston and swept them out of the playoffs.
The 76ers pushed the Atlanta Hawks and Dominique Wilkins to the brink of elimination. But James Worthy was lost in the first half of game 7 with an ankle injury and would not return as the Hawks moved on to the next round.
The Knicks dismantled the Hornets winning each game by double digits.
Conference semi-finals:
The Bulls and Knicks both swept their secound round opponents. The Knicks physical defense made offense hard on Dominique Wilkins and the Hawks and the series was never close. The Bulls faced off the Pistons again but what a difference a year makes! After last years classic seven game series, the Bulls dominated the older Pistons. The Pistons were never really close at the end of each game and felt their championship window close shut with this loss. The two best teams in the East in the regular season would face off in the Eastern Conference Finals.
Conference Finals:
The Knicks had certainly exceeded expectations from the beginning of the season to comfortably make it this far. But the Bulls were a much higher bar than the one that had been set. New York looked to take one of the first two home games in Chicago, but Michael Jordan and his crew made sure that did not happen by showcasing the offense that led the league in scoring this year. Both home games the Bulls scores over 110 and the Knicks could not keep up. In New York, Patrick Ewing played one of his best games in a must win game three playing a 31-7-6 to give the Bulls their first loss of the postseason. They could not carry that momentum into the next game however and fell flat in game 4 as the Bulls took control of the series. The Bulls would close out the series in game 5 and in typical Jordan fashion MJ would be the one to give the knockout blow by hitting a jumper as the clock wound down to ensure the Bulls 4th straight trip to the Finals.
I) THE NBA FINALS:
In a rematch of last year’s NBA Finals the Jazz wanted to show everyone that they were not the same team that had fallen to the Bulls a year ago. But the ghost of Finals past crept in as the Bulls led another fourth quarter comeback against this Jazz team and with the perimeter play of the Bulls firing on all cylinders, the post play of the Jazz was nowhere to be found down the stretch as the Bulls snatched the opening game. Game 2 wasn’t close as MJ posted another Finals triple double. Game 3 saw Craig Ehlo return to the lineup for the Jazz, but it was Karl Malone who would steal the show. He would drop 50 on the Bulls as they had no answer for him in the post. The Mailman put on an absolute clinic and exposed the biggest weakness of the Bulls, their post play. Malone had been hot all playoffs but now he was reaching a level that only so few in the league could ever get to. He continued in game 4 as him and Stockton led the Jazz back from down 20 at the end of the first half. Stockton put the finishing touches on the come back with a mid range jumper with less than a minute to go. A Jordan desperation three hit the back of the rim and suddenly the Jazz had tied the series. Before game 5 Phil Jackson decided to try and match their size and moved Sam Perkins out of the starting lineup in favor of big man Alec Kessler. It was the first major lineup adjustment the Bulls had made since before they started their title run. Game 5 was a classic where no team had a bigger lead than 6 points the whole game. While Jordan missed a shot that would have ended the game in regulation he was a perfect 4-4 for 11 points in overtime as Stockton and Malone combined to go 2-7 for 4 points. Jordan would finish the Jazz off on their home court in game 6 clinching the title with another 40 point performance. After he missed that shot at the end of regulation in game 5 he went 22-25 for 51 points the rest of the series! The Bulls three-peated in an epic Finals!
J) OFFSEASON BUILD UP
Retirements: Dennis Johnson
RULE CHANGES:
1993 NBA DRAFT: This was a pretty major draft as Chris Webber and Penny Hardaway we’re potential franchise changers at the top of this draft. A huge shock happened on lottery night as the Pacers ended up with the second pick after having the worst odds in the lottery and Charlotte had the third pick in the draft after receiving Orlando’s pick in a trade. The Kings ended with the top pick and they took Webber over Penny as they plan to team him with Larry Johnson for a monster future front court. The Pacers drafted Penny Hardaway but then traded him to Charlotte for 3rd overall pick Jamal Mashburn and Avery Johnson and a lottery protected first rounder next year. It will be very interesting to see how this trade looks seasons from now.
FREE AGENCY: Tim Hardaway signed with the Miami Heat in the offseason. That might be the big free agent signing they need, pairing him with Shaq might be the star power needed to challenge the Bulls. Speaking of the Bulls, Sam Perkins left Chicago for more money in Portland. Could this be the first crack in the foundation of the defending three time champs? David Robinson resigned with the Spurs and Magic Johnson opted out to sign a max extension with the Lakers that ensures that he will retire in LA, but after that deal and re-signing Vlade Divac, the Lakers has no money to add that depth that they need with an aging roster.

1993-1994
A) REGULAR SEASON (WEST) :
The season got off to a great start on opening night as the Charles Barkley and the Lakers faced off against the #1 pick Chris Webber and the Kings. The Lakers dominated the night in what was a statement for the rest of the league. The Lakers finally reached a dominant level that was expected as they never spent a day lower than the third seed in the West. Charles Barkley led the way and one his first MVP award. It was more of the same for Seattle who also dominated the West and even got the best of the defending champion Bulls in a classic regular season match up that saw the Bulls lose despite 56 point from MJ. The Golden State Warriors were the saw the biggest rise as they finished 3rd in the west despite losing Tim Hardaway in free agency. They made a deadline deal to get Mark Price from Cleveland and putting him alongside Mitch Richmond and Chris Mullin makes one of the deadliest shooting trios in the league. The Utah Jazz were not quite as dominant as the last two years but still finished in the top four in the west.

  10. Minnesota Timberwolves
  11. Sacramento Kings
  12. Dallas Mavericks
  13. Denver Nuggets
B) REGULAR SEASON (EAST) :
Despite losing a core piece of their dynasty, the Bulls did not show any signs of slowing down this season and finished 10 games ahead of the second place Knicks. It looked like they might ahve a challenger early on as the Charlotte Hornets made quite a statement at the beginning of the year. Eventual Rookie of the Year Penny Hardaway scored 26 and got the victory over the three time champions. The Hornets had a very nice team mixing the playoff experience of returners Dell Curry, Rick Fox, Kevin Willis, and Travis Mays with the potential of Penny and fellow rookies Toni Kukoc and Gheorge Muresan. While this team might need a year or two to develop the roster has some serious potential. The team that they traded with on draft night for Penny, the Indiana Pacers, was actually neck and neck with Charlotte throughout the year. They only finished a game behind them for fourth in the East. Patrick Ewing and the Knicks continue to do their thing against every team in the East besides Chicago and in Detroit it looks like all those minutes are starting to take their toll on Isiah Thomas as he barely played over 50 games this season and put up career low numbers. The Celtics also missed the playoffs for the first time in this sim, a far cry from the domination they displayed in our first season. While the Bulls finished atop the conference once again, although this might be the last season this group is together. Ron Harper, Scottie Pippen and Horace Grant are all free agents at the end of the season and the Bulls decided to sign Ron Harper to a long term extension during the season which may force Pippen and Grant to leave for more money. Is this their last dance?

2nd- Clyde (Blazers) KJ (Suns) Mullin (Warriors) McDaniel (Sonics) Ewing (Knicks)
3rd - Stockton (Jazz) Jeff Malone(Bullets) Dale Davis (Magic) Pippen (Bulls) Hakeem (Rockets)
F) THE ALL-STAR GAME:
Team Jordan vs Team Barkley
Notable moments:
3pt contest winner: Dana Barros (Sonics) - Won on the final shot!
Dunk contest winner: Labradford Smith
G) THE PLAYOFFS (WEST) :
First round:
Seattle had a couple players out of the rotation to start the playoffs and it showed as eight-seeded San Antonio took game 3 in overtime to take the series lead. Dana Barros would return for Seattle the next game and Seattle would take the next three and the series.
Portland and Utah locked horns again this season. Portland took a 3-1 lead but Utah fought off elimination in game 5 with a couple of buzzer beaters. The first was by Stockton to send the game into overtime and the second was a jumper by Malone to win it in overtime. They could not keep the fight up the next game though, as the Blazers took game six and moved on to the next round.
Phoenix showed off the values of being experienced in the playoffs as they upset the Warriors behind Kevin Johnson's spectacular play. The Suns win in 6.
The Lakers swept the Clippers in the Battle for LA.
Conference semi-finals:
At this point it is business as usual for the Sonics: Dominate regular season, disappoint in the playoffs. Despite a couple close calls, that is exactly the position that they were in after falling three games to nothing in this series. But they rallied back and won the next three to tie the series. In one of the better games of the sim, game seven went to double overtime as Clyde and the Blazers finally put away the Sonics and avoid a major collapse
As good as KJ had been he was no match for Magic who routinely posted up the smaller guard as the Lakers made quick work of the Suns, sweeping them as well
Conference Finals:
With Seattle out the Lakers would cruise to a Finals appearance by winning this series in 5. Charles Barkley put up some absolutely amazing numbers in this series including a 32 point 17 Rebound game and the Lakers returned to the NBA Finals in Barkley's second season with the team
H) THE PLAYOFFS (EAST) :
First round:
The Bulls swept the first round again this time sending the Bucks home.
The Hornets and Pacers faced off in the first round in a matchup that has been in the making since draft night. The home team would win every game off this series except the last one. The Hornets could not score in game 7 and Indiana ran away with the road win by 22.
The Washington Bullets and Philadelphia 76ers series was the exact opposite of Charlotte/Indiana. In this one the road team won every game but the last one. It was a very close series with 3 games decided by 5 points or less including game 7 where Jeff Malone led Washington to the second round.
The Knicks destroyed the Pistons in a sweep.
Conference semi-finals:
The Bulls and Knicks both swept their secound round opponents for the second year in a row. Both Indiana and Washington were out of their league this year as the two best teams in the East would once again square off in the conference finals
Conference Finals:
Michael Jordan scored 50 in the game 1 in a blowout win. The Bulls continued to dominate in game 2. Game 3 was the closest in the series as it came down to the final minute. Scottie Pippen hit a desperation three to break the tie with under a minute to go and the Bulls took a 3-0 lead. The Knicks would win the next game but got sent home in game 5 as the Bulls made were conference champions for the fifth year in a row and are going for their fourth straight championship, The Bulls continue to dominate and it might be a couple of years before another team can challenge in the East if they stay together
I) THE NBA FINALS:
Jordan continued his trend of statement game 1 performances by putting 47 on the Lakers to start the series. While the duo of Magic Johnson and Charles Barkley does wonders offensively, with both of those guys on the perimeter they had problems guarding Jordan. Ron Harper was lost for the rest of the series in game 1 with a knee injury which put the Bulls chances of winning the championship in danger. But Jordan and Pippen would combine with Jordan bringing the offense with 36 and Scottie Pippen forcing Charles Barkley to shoot 30% from the field in game 2 to give the Bulls the edge. The Lakers would not go down without a fight and took game 3 as Magic and Barkley took over the offensive load scoring nearly half of the Lakers points and Vlade Divac provided 6 blocks. With game 4 being a pivotal one, the Lakers failed to answer the call. After game 3's performance, Barkley and Magic combined to go 4-20 into the fourth quarter. The defense of Jordan and Pippen frustrated the Lakers as they shut down any open look in the best defensive performance of the sim considering the stakes. The Bulls won a blowout game and would win their fourth championship in a row by beating the Lakers in game 5. Jordan was once again named Finals MVP as he averaged 40 PPG for the series. Just as impressive was the defense that Scottie Pippen played on Barkley, holding the MVP Barkley to 36% from the field for the series. In his last on court appearance before free agency, Scottie might have played his way into a max deal, the only question is will the Bulls be the one to offer it?
J) OFFSEASON BUILD UP
Retirements: Larry Bird, Kevin Mchale, Moses Malone
The first hall of famers of the sim as most of these guys had hall of fame careers before the sim began. Larry Bird was still buckets for the first few years of the sim before age got the best of him. McHale was another Boston great that had one of the best post games of all the players and had a memorable all-star game moment in his last appearance. Moses Malone was the first ring chaser of the sim. He jumped around from contender for contender each year. His last year he played with the Bulls as a backup center and got his ring on the way out.
1994 NBA DRAFT: The top two players in the draft are Grant Hill and Jason Kidd. Miami jumped into 2nd place on lottery night after having the 10th best odds. The Nuggets got the #1 pick and selected Grant Hill and Miami followed up with Jason Kidd. Glenn Robinson fell to the Bucks at 5 and the Nets drafted Jalen Rose later on in the lottery.
FREE AGENCY: Most of the top players in free agency resigned. Clyde stayed in Portland and Scottie Pippen stayed in Chicago. Dominique Wilkins signed with the Spurs, and Horace Grant left the Bulls to sign with the Miami Heat. That gives the Heat a powerful lineup of Kidd, Hardaway, Grant, and Shaq. Additionally Marc Jackson signed with Houston and Steve Kerr signed with the Warriors.

Compelling case on why all 30 NBA franchises should move cities

Sure, some team names make perfect sense for their location (Pistons, Hornets, Nuggets, Celtics), while some team names require a historian to explain (Lakers, Jazz, Grizzlies). And then some teams are just lame weather reports (Heat, Suns, Thunder), while others are entertainment industry advertisements (Magic, Raptors, 76ers). And then there are all dum animal names that are completely interchangeable. The point is each franchise has to move and not just swap names but take their entire organization with them, players and all.
Judging criteria is simple:
Let’s start this one off with 2020 Champs: Lakers!
Don’t question the last one. It makes no sense just like any time travel movie the longer it goes.
I left so many better terrible jokes off the table all for the expense of making a perfect loop team to team. Anyways, thank you for reading. Bye.
PS. Almost forgot. CELTICS move to Ireland to become Level 3 Leinster League soccer team. Because ffffffff
With a franchise void, Seattle is given an expansion team. Nephews and trolls vote for new name and it is a tie between “The Hedgehogs” (named after a Hollywood movie flop) and “Boeing McBoeingFace MAX”. Either way, Raptors no longer worst team name in history of team name origins.

Club 60 "Those are video game numbers!" (Week 17)

Club 60 is dedicated to tracking individual game performances where PTS + TRB + AST + STL + BLK >= 60 aka "Video Game Numbers"
(games between 2/13 - 2/27)

Near Misses

This section is dedicated to players who didn't have a Club 60 performance during the week but came very close (55+). (Players with Club 60s during the week, wont be highlighted here barring an unusual circumstance)
BAM Adebayo leads us off with the highest NearMiss this week, a 58 in MIA L @ ATL (more on this game later). BAM's 58 came on (28 - 19 - 7 - 3 - 1). Interestingly enough, this is MIA first NearMiss of the season (No Club 60s). Hope to see more from him in the future!
Giannis picked up two more NearMisses this week. He started it off with a 57 in MIL W @ DET on (33 - 16 - 4 - 3 - 1) in 31:47, then followed that up with another 57 in another MIL W this time vs PHI. That 57 was on (31 - 17 - 8 - 0 - 1) in 29:07. I am highlighting his minutes because both of those would easily be Club 60s with more minutes played. Outside those two games the fewest minutes played this week in a NearMiss or Club 60 was (LBJ's 55 in 34:12). Giannis has a league leading 11 NearMisses. (Trae and Russ are tied for second with 6 a piece)
John Collins picked up his second NearMiss of the season putting up a 57 in ATL W vs DAL on (35 - 17 - 2 - 1 - 2). Odd note, Collins last (and only other) NearMiss was on Jan 22, while this game came on Feb 22.
Siakam had his third NearMiss of the season in TOR W vs PHO. Siakam put up 55 on (37 - 12 - 3 - 0 - 3).
LBJ rounds out our NearMisses with a 55 of his own in LAL W vs NOP. LBJ's 55 came on (40 - 8 - 6 - 0 - 1) in 34:12 (as mention above)

2/24/2020 MIL Bradley Beal 41:01 OT 55 2 3 0 0 60 L
All I gotta say is "It's ABOUT DAMN TIME!" because Embiid my dude, where have you been!?
Embiid finished last year with 7 Club 60s (5th most) so it was very surprising to almost get to MARCH before he got his first one this year but maybe Joel was simply saving it for later in the year.
Embiid had TWO Club 60s week with one being a Club 70 (after not registering one all season). He started it off with a 61 in PHI W vs BRK on (39 - 16 - 2 - 2 - 2) then four days later put a 70 in PHI W vs ATL on (49 - 14 - 3 - 3 - 1). Embiid followed that up by getting injured because it's 2020 and we are not allowed to enjoy life anymore. Big man I hope you get better soon!
Beal was trying not to be outdone with TWO Club 60s of his own. Beal started it off with a 65 on (53 - 5 - 4 - 2 - 1) in WAS L @ CHI, and followed that up the very next day with a 60 on (55 - 2 - 3 - 0 - 0) in WAS L vs MIL. While losing both Club 60s is rough, Beal became the first player to get a Club 60 vs MIL this season (more on this later).
Trae is slowly but surely raising up the Club 60 charts with his SEVENTH (he is now alone in 4th) in ATL W vs MIA on (50 - 2 - 8 - 2 - 1). Most importantly for Trae ATL picked up the W. After losing his first 3 Club 60s, ATL has completely turned it around and won his last 4 Club 60s. Now they just need to pick up wins in games where Trae or Collins don't go off (ATL played 4 games this week and won Trae's Club 60 game and Collins' NearMiss game, while losing the other two)
McCollum gets his first Club 60 of the season in POR W vs DET. McCollum was one rebound shy of a 40 pt triple double. He put up 63 on (41 - 9 - 12 - 1 - 0).

AND THEN THERE WERE THREE! MIL (1-0) picked up a W but gave up a Club 60 to Beal leaving only DEN, OKC and SAC as the only teams to now allow a Club 60 this season. DEN has the distinction of being the only team to not allow a Club 60 this season OR last season.
MIA (1-1) gave up their second Club 60 in a L to ATL. MIA has given up two Club 60s, to Giannis and Trae, yet they beat Giannis and lost to Trae. Obviously this means Trae > Giannis.
DET (1-2) gave up their third Club 60 and ATL (0-4) gave up their fourth Club 60, both in losses.
CHI (1-4) gave up their fifth Club 60 (tied for second with BRK and UTA) but got their first W when giving up a Club 60.

Notes

Just a quick reminder of what this series of posts are about:
"The wild numbers this season got me thinking, what would classify as "video game" numbers. Numbers that just do not make sense outside of a video game.
Bill Simmons had the 42 club in the Book of Basketball. But the 42 club is about averages (and only includes points, rebounds, assists), while "video game" numbers would be only about a single game.
I wanted to include steals and blocks into the formula (because they should matter) and I wanted it to be something extremely difficult to achieve. Again it should make you questions "are these 2k numbers?!"
in 2009 playoffs LeBron had a 51.7 average (points, rebounds, assists) so i felt it needed to be higher than that.
I settled on 60. If you can put up over 60 between points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks....then (imo) those are legit video game numbers."

[OC] Fanbase Happiness Power Rankings

I did this a few years ago and after the enormous upheaval of the past few weeks I think it's time to take another look. Bear in mind these are all just my opinion, and that I'm an idiot and I forget tons of shit all the time. I'm just bored at work.
TIER 1 aka "Somebody pinch me":
1. LA Clippers - I mean you just pulled off what most people were saying was impossible, and although it cost you a ton of picks you didn't have to gut the team. Set up to contend for the next 4 years, and even better it came at the expense of the Lakers.
TIER 2 aka "Man this off-season was so close to being perfect" :
2. Brooklyn Nets - You did it, you got your two stars and like the Clippers you plucked them from right under your big brother's nose. The only issue here is that KD got injured so this season is probably not one where you're gonna contend. Still, what a massive vote of confidence in the Nets operation.
3. LA Lakers - AD is a Laker, and the roster around him isn't a disaster. Getting two-timed by Kawhi has gotta sting but there are at least competent NBA players around your star duo so you should definitely be a contender regardless.
TIER 3 aka "Kawhi has gone omg" :
4. Philadelphia 76ers - Jimmy and Reddick are gone but most people would argue you got better. With Kawhi going West it now looks a lot like a two-horse race in the East, and Horford might be a huge addition.
5. Milwaukee Bucks - Brogdon left, but there is a decent chance a trade is in the works to reinforce the guard spots. You have the MVP, a great shot at making the Finals, and the reigning Executive/Coach of the Year. Bucks making the Finals looks like at the worst a 50/50 outcome.
6. Toronto Raptors - Bittersweet maybe, but that title is going to go down in legend. It will still be a lot of fun watching Siakham blossom into (hopefully) a proper All-Star this year, and the books are totally clean after this season. Excited to see what Masai and Nurse cook up.
TIER 4 aka "Funny how things turn out huh" :
7. New Orleans Pelicans - Things were looking pretty bleak there for a while, but the AD haul was substantial and then you won the lottery. Now you've got all those Lakers youngsters, Zion, a bunch of picks, and some smart free agent signings. Making the playoffs this year could be tough given how stacked the West is, but it doesn't feel like the wait will be long.
TIER 5 aka "I can almost talk myself into thinking we're a contender" :
8. Utah Jazz - Some big moves needed to happen, and your front office made them. Mitchell will be a year older, Conley is a great addition, and Gobert is still a beast. So long as Conley stays healthy I'd be feeling good about my chances against anyone so long as the young players keep developing.
9. Denver Nuggets - Jokic kicked ass in his first playoff outing, and you committed major money to Murray. Hopefully everyone kicks on from last season and Jokic cements himself as a top 5 player. The hope is you'll be a more complete team with better health than the Lakers, and maybe you can leverage that into another great regular season.
10. Houston Rockets - The Warriors are gone, and you could make an argument that the Rockets are now the best team in the West because it's only really the Warriors who have been able to stop them. It must also be gratifying that all the talk of locker-room turmoil amounted to nothing. Still, CP3 is probably going to decline every year, so the window (if it still exists) is closing all the time.
11. Portland Trailblazers - I actually like the Whiteside addition a lot because he fits with how your defense works perfectly. Losing wing depth is tough in this league, but it's still exciting to think about how this revamped team will look. Dame also solidified his claim to having the biggest balls in the league, and then doubled down on committing to your team other stars be damned. That's cool as hell.
TIER 6 aka "Let's just see how this looks then I'll get back to you" :
12. Indiana Pacers - Oladipo will be back, you got Brogdon, Collison retired, Bogdanovic and Young left. What a weird mixed bag of an off-season. Still, you were excellent last season and Turner was getting into the DPOY conversation. If he takes another leap and Brogdon is worth his contract, you should be be a top 4 seed in the East again.
13. Boston Celtics - Losing Kyrie was probably a blessing rather than a curse by the end, and replacing him with Kemba at least ensures that you'll still field an All-Star at PG. Losing Horford and Baynes hurts though, because it's tough to see how the defense doesn't take a step back. Still, Tatum and Brown will still develop, you got rid of Toxic Terry, and Hayward will hopefully be better another year removed from his injury.
14. Dallas Mavericks - This had all the makings of a Tier 4 team along with the Pelicans, but then everyone in Dallas sat on their hands instead of adding talent around your young stars. The key here obviously is Porzingis looking like his old self - if he does you'll be a hugely exciting young team with playoff aspirations and a big future; if he doesn't then you're hoping it's fun watching Luka develop while KP works back towards being fully fit.
TIER 7 aka "Well that could have gone worse I guess" :
15. Golden State Warriors - Losing KD and Klay to injury was awful, losing KD to the Nets was salt in the wound. Still, getting what will be regarded around the league as a big asset back means that you can reconfigure the roster going forward if the Russell/Curry backcourt doesn't bear fruit. Keeping Looney helps a lot too.
16. San Antonio Spurs - Last year was always going to be odd with so many departures, but I think Dejounte being out masked how good of a team you still are. Smart off-season pickups and I think you'll end up like last year's Clippers - a far better and more cohesive team than people expect, and a nightmare Round 1 matchup in the playoffs.
TIER 8 aka "We're gonna be fun to watch at least" :
17. Atlanta Hawks - I think this is a really smart rebuild. I like the bold moves in the draft, and Trae Young is just such a great entertainer. Even with the weakened East I have difficulty seeing you as a playoff team this year, but as a Hawks fan I'd be really happy about how the front office are playing this. A few years away maybe.
18. Sacramento Kings - This off-season was more of a lateral move than a definite step up. Still, last season exceeded expectations and you were most people's League Pass darlings. I'd be kinda bummed you couldn't figure out a way to have a Cousins return, but maybe Kings fans don't care.
19. Memphis Grizzlies - Ja/JJJ are gonna be good, and in general I think you had a solid summer so far. It was time to part with Conley and Mark, but I think you got pretty solid value for them and I doubt you'll be out of playoff contention for too long.
20. Orlando Magic - I mean you didn't make any seismic moves, but personally I think it's pretty cool that an All-Star signed a long-term contract with you rather than leaving. That's a pretty solid endorsement of where the franchise is heading. Playoffs are obviously a realistic goal again, but the real difference-maker would be Fultz at some point becoming a positive contributor. If he somehow turns his career around and becomes a competent starting point guard, you'd be in the mix for a top 4 spot.
21. Detroit Pistons - Rose is a gamble, but one that I think you needed to make. This team was crying out for a dynamic ball-handling guard, and if Rose's shooting holds up I think he'll be great value. You also had limited flexibility while obviously needing to try something different, so this is probably the best you could have hoped for. I'm positive about it and I think with a healthy Blake and Rose you'll have a team capable of pulling off some shock wins when they're hot.
22. Miami Heat - I mean personally I think your moves make no sense, but whatever. At least there's a star in Miami again? Thing is, you're stuck with these guys now and they're obviously not good enough to finish better than around 6th. My hope is you figure out a way to get Russ, because watching Russ and Jimmy share the ball would be hilarious.
TIER 9 aka "I doubt we'll even be that fun, but at least there's a glimmer of hope" :
23. Chicago Bulls - The young guys should come on. If Lauri/Carter can play 75+ games that'd be great, and I think you drafted well. I just don't know that anyone of these guys are gonna be good enough this year to win many games. Lavine might have a fantastic season and push for an All-Star spot given how talent starved the East is, so that'll probably be the highlight.
24. Oklahoma City Thunder - I mean, this had to happen at some point right? The picks probably won't be great for a while so in the next couple of years I'd be banking on SGA being a stud and trying to flip what other competent players you have into more picks. Still, although it sucks that PG ditched you at least the haul was enormous. The Clippers might well be a totally different team before they've finished their pick obligations from this trade, so those later picks might be gold.
25. Cleveland Cavaliers - You're gonna be truly awful this year, but the front office seem to be making sensible decisions. Kevin Love having a good opening few months and then getting moved to a contender for some assets would help brighten the future a little. Still, probably facing a few seasons at the bottom of the pile to be honest.
26. Phoenix Suns - I just wish I knew what the plan was. Weird draft decisions, weird trade decisions, weird free agent decisions. Booker and to some extent Ayton deserve better. How many more years will Booker say he's done missing the playoffs before he decides to take matters into his own hands? Still, there's just about enough raw talent here that you can't rule out a slight uptick in fortunes.
27. Minnesota Timberwolves - So much of this depends on Wiggins. If he figures some stuff out you're back on track, or if you're able to move him you can at least build something different around Towns. If he's still bad and noone wants him, it looks increasingly unlikely that you'll be a Western playoff team any time soon. KAT is such an enormous talent that you have to figure out a way to maximise his early prime if you want to keep him long term. Getting Russell would have helped, so maybe there's a trade to be done there after Dec 15th.
TIER 10 aka "I never really liked basketball anyway so this is fine" :
28. New York Knicks - Oof that had to hurt. It wouldn't be so bad if Dolan hadn't hyped up this summer for months, but noone even taking a look at MSG as a landing spot is a proper reality check. It's similar to the Lakers not landing Kawhi - players are showing they do give a shit about joining well-run franchises. The Nets and the Clippers did things the right way, and they usurped their neighbours as a result. Still, you did add enough competent players that bottoming out completely this year doesn't appear likely.
29. Washington Wizards - No GM for the draft or free agency, and you're applying for a Disabled Player Exception for John Wall which means he's likely out for the entirety of next season. Bradley Beal says all the right things, but what is the point of him being on the Wizards? Whoever your eventual GM is they really need to work out what the hell the plan is.
30. Charlotte Hornets - Landed Terry Rozier at a huge discount, got rid of the cancerous locker room presence that was Kemba Walker, and staved off interest from bigger teams in criminally underrated Nick Batum. GOAT offseason.

Club 60 "Those are video game numbers!" (Week 13)

Club 60 is dedicated to tracking individual game performances where PTS + TRB + AST + STL + BLK >= 60 aka "Video Game Numbers"
(games between 1/16 - 1/22)

Near Misses

This section is dedicated to players who didn't have a Club 60 performance during the week but came very close (55+). (Players with Club 60s during the week, wont be highlighted here barring an unusual circumstance)
Giannis starts us off this with the highest NearMiss of the week with a 58 in MIL W vs BOS. Giannis went for (32 - 17 - 7 - 0 - 2), it was his 7th NearMiss of the season.
Zach LaVine registered his second NearMiss of the season with a 58 of his own in CHI W vs CLE. LaVine's 58 came on (42 - 6 - 3 - 5 - 2), giving CHI a little of everything to go with a lot of points. CHI has won both of his NearMisse games.
Westbrook put up back-to-back NearMisses. Westbrook started off with a thirty point triple double in HOU L vs OKC finishing with 57 on (32 - 11 - 12 - 2 - 0) then followed that up the very next game with another 57 in HOU W vs DEN on (28 - 16 - 8 - 4 - 1). D'Antoni said they needed rebounds and Russ complied getting 27 rebounds in two games.
Luka didn't register a Club 60 this week but did have a NearMiss in DAL L vs LAC. Luka was 1 AST shy of a thirty point triple double of his own finishing with a 57 on (36 - 10 - 9 - 0 - 2).
Kawhi joined the party as well this week also getting a 57 in LAC W @ NOP. Kawhi's 57 came on (39 - 6 - 6 - 5 - 1), it was his third NearMiss of the season.
Donovan Mitchell got his first NearMiss of the season in UTA L @ NOP. Mitchell put up (46 - 6 - 2 - 2 - 0) to finish with a 56. 46 pts and 6 rebs yet finishes 4 shy of a Club 60, really goes to show how hard it is to get to 60.
John Collins also got his first NearMiss with a 55 in ATL W vs LAC. Collins put up (33 - 16 - 2 - 3 - 1) to get his 55. Great to see him on the court and balling again after his 25 game 'vacation'.
Kemba put up a 55 of his own on (40 - 11 - 3 - 0 - 1) in BOS L @ MIL. This was Kemba's second NearMiss of the season.

Club 60: Week 13

Date Opp Player Mins OT PTS TRB AST STL BLK Score W/L
1/20/2020 GSW Damian Lillard 45:08 OT 61 10 7 1 0 79 W

1/18/2020 BOS Devin Booker 40:39 39 10 9 2 0 60 W
After having no players register a Club 60 last week (first time in two season we go a week without a club 60) we 5 players get on this week and NONE were named Harden, Giannis, or Luka!
Dame.....wait let me try that again DAME! WENT OFF! DAME! had a Club 66 on points alone but he isn't a one trick pony finishing with a Club 70, 79 (highest score this season) in POR OT W VS GSW on (61 - 10 - 7 - 1 - 0). As if the 61 points weren't enough he has 18 non-points.
Simmons got his second Club 60 on the season (both in January) in PHI W @ BRK. Simmons had a thirty point triple double on (34 - 12 - 12 - 5 - 2) to finish with 65.
Trae put up a 64 in ATL L vs TOR on (42 - 6 - 15 - 1 - 0). This was Trae's third Club 60 of the season tying him with AD for fourth most Club 60s. He also has 6 NearMisses this year. Unfortunately the 'Despite the Loss' moniker seems accurate as ATL is 0-3 in his Club 60s.
After not having a Club 60 last week there was some speculation as to who would be the first player to get us back on track and the answer was Brandon Ingram who got his first Club 60 of his career with a 64 in NOP OT W vs UTA on (49 - 8 - 6 - 0 - 1) Ingram had a NearMiss to start the year so it's great to see him get his first Club 60. Hopefully more from him.
Booker picked up his second Club 60 of the season with an exact 60 in PHO W @ BOS on (39 - 10 - 9 - 2 - 0). Booker was 1 AST shy of a thirty point triple double. Not only that, he became the first player this to register a Club 60 vs BOS.

We have a new leader in the clubhouse with Dame's 79, first Club 70 of 2020! It is going to take a Club 80 to unseat him. Let's see if it can be done. There were 2 Club 80s last year. (hardenx2)
On another note, HOU (27-16) is now 13-1 when Harden gets a Club 60 and 14-15 when he does not. Yikes.

BOS has fallen! Booker's 60 was the first Club 60 BOS has allowed all season. They only gave up 2 last year but both of those were to bigs (Aldridge & Embiid) making Booker the first guard to drop a 60 on BOS in the two season we have been tracking.
That leaves us with DEN, MIL, OKC, and SAC as the only team to not surrender a Club 60 this season.
DEN did not give up a Club 60 last season either making them the only team to not allow a Club 60 since we starting tracking.
GSW gave up their 3rd Club 60 (0-3) but their first to someone not named Luka. (Lillard)
BRK gave up their 4th but are surprisingly 2-2 in Club 60s. All 4 were to guards (Lillard, Trae, Harden, Simmons)
TOR gave up their 2nd and are 1-1 when surrendering a Club 60.
Oddly enough BRK and TOR last season were both 4-2 when surrendering a Club 60 so the .500 this season, fits both squads.
UTA gave up their 2nd Club 60 also but fell to 0-2.
