Please note I am not trying to stir anyone up, I am just a Vegas local giving my opinion on a convention I feel is dying here.
I have not done much research on who runs the Vegas version of Otakon but it's really sad compared to the one in the east coast.
The organising of the con itself was terrible. The schedule was not posted until 2 weeks before the con. I feel this screwed the attendance completely. Did they really expect anyone out of town to want to show up with only two weeks notice?
Also, I have no idea who decided it was a good idea to stick the ticket booth in front of a fire exit doorway. The line would have only ten people in it tops and a staff lady would start shooing people to stop '' blocking the doorway''. Since nothing else was happening at this con I sat near the scene and watched for an hour as people that just wanted tickets kept getting yelled at for blocking a doorway. I saw people even leave the line and head back to the casino after being yelled at for something that's completely the organizers fault. They should of just kept the booth outside the con like in 2017.
Panels kept getting canceled too, and people that were supposed to show up, some '' famous'' youtuber(s), decided to not come either. Most of the rooms in the convention center were dead. The Maid Cafe was nice up until I return to see the same sandwiches that had been sitting out on a table for well over 10 hours, I can only hope they threw them away eventually instead of serving them.
I am very curious what the attendance of Otakon Vegas 2018 was. I don't think it was more than 300 people total each day of the weekend, including staff and merchants. The staff members were very nice but I feel bad they ended up wasting their weekend working at a dead con. I will suggest anyone looking for an anime con in Vegas to just go take a 4 hour trip to a decent California con.
LVLUP EXPO and Sabakon are very, very small cons and have always been small cons in Vegas, mostly made by and for the local high school and college anime fans. I can not recommended people out the state of Vegas to bother with these cons either, but I would suggest either of them over Otakon Vegas.
