Deserter's Diary

PFC Matthew Denver. D Co. 17th Squad. Camp Forlorn Hope.
If found don’t be a dick and return it. Preferably BEFORE you read it.
So the LT suggested we keep a diary of our times here, so here we go.
11.29
I’ve been sent to this hellhole called Camp Forlorn Hope along with the rest of my squad. This place is even goddam worse than the other soldiers said. The legion is always up our ass no matter what. We’re on the bottom of the Do Not Send list in terms of supplies, and worst of all the entire place is falling apart and it smells like brahmin shit. I wanted to desert before I got here now I’m seriously considering it.
11.30
I brought it up to Kara today during guard duty. She feels the exact same way. Gonna bring it up to TJ and Sasha tomorrow. Kara’ll try to find anyone else here that’ll go with us. This might actually happen.
  1. 01
TJ and Sasha are down to leave with us. They’ve actually been debating asking us themselves. Kara also found two more of the guys from goon squad. We have the guys but all we need now is a plan. I’m thinking we go on patrol but never come back.
12.02
It’s a go. We planned it out with Willie and James, the guys from the goon squad. Me and TJ are gonna be on night watch in about two days. The rest of the guys will sneak out then. We’re all gonna start saving up ammo and food before we leave.
12.03
So far so good, no one’s on to us. Stomach feeling like it’s full of bloatflies.
12.04
Fucking TJ. It was all going according to plan. The rest of the guys were walking out when some young, bright-eyed, idealistic young boy noticed us and tried to stop us. So what does TJ do? He fucking shoots the kid. Two rounds, right in the goddam gut. He was stupid but he didn’t need to die. Now we’re not just deserters but wanted for murder of an NCR soldier. A few soldiers tried to follow us but we lost them. I’m regretting ditching my uniform jacket and armor. My tank top isn’t very warm. It seems like the rest of the guys are regretting doing the same.
12.05
More walking, found a leather jacket on a dead guy. Still has a lot of blood on it but hey, it’s warm enough.
12.06
Got into a firefight with a few raiders. They got mowed down. Don’t bring pool cues to a gunfight. At least we now have “fresh”clothes. Not much usable on them but a few drugs and some miscellaneous stuff.
12.07
Ran into a caravan from Primm. We pawned of the little bit of stuff we got and learned that Primm was in need of some law. We might just fit that bill. We’d need to stay away from the NCR guys there but they won’t be a problem as long as we don’t cross that bridge.
12.08
Goddam Primm is farther than I thought. Almost out of food. Found a bounty poster of us. They didn’t get my eyes right. Willie got stung by a radscorp. He’s not doing so well. Hope he does well.
12.09
Willie passed in the night. We had a quick burial. The grave was so shallow if he had a woody it’d be sticking out of the dirt. Ran out of food, stole some from a shack in Primm pass. The owner was OD’d on the bed, he won’t mind.
12.10
Smoke coming from Nipton’s way. Glad we decided to avoid the town. Even though it’s not going too well I don’t regret deserting at all.
12.11
We finally made it. Primm. We’ll go in tomorrow morning and hit up the town. I’m so excited and nervous for this. I will not be sleeping tonight.
12.12
Holy shit. They’re dead, Sasha, James, TJ. They’re dead. It went horribly wrong. The three of them went inside the casino to take over. Kara and I waited outside the door in case of somebody coming. We heard them screaming something about getting down then gunshots. Kara got hit in the leg through the door. We got out of town before anyone saw us. We’re holed up in some old RV. Managed to stem the bleeding but Kara’s really pale, she’s not gonna make it another few day if we can’t find a doctor.
12.13
Heading North for Goodsprings. It’s been slow going with Kara’s leg and some escaped convicts patrolling the roads. Her leg looks even worse, it’s starting to ooze pus and smell like rotting meat. Really worried for her.
12.14
We made it. Kara’s at Doc Mitchell’s place being patched up. I’m just gonna be at the bar until I either blackout or the doc calls me in. I can’t thank god enough for making it here.
12.15
Thank fucking god, Kara made it. The doc had to amputate the leg but she made it. She’s still out cold but he say’s she’ll wake up soon enough. He has me running a few errands in payment, mainly fetching water and collecting plants.
12.16
She’s still out. Doc’s taking good care of her. Managed to get some caps from a redhead for killing a few geckos. Negotiated with the bartender to sleep in one of the empty houses. This place is nice. No NCR, nice people, and it’s quiet here.
12.17
She woke up today. Still groggy and pretty much unaware of what’s going on but she’s awake. Did buy a few things from the shopkeeper, Chet was his name I think. I’m gonna be up all night building this.
12.18
It’s done. I built a prosthetic leg from some scrap wood and metal, a boot, some cement, a plastic bowl, and some medical braces. Really hope she likes it. I went and saw her today but she was sleeping so I went down to the bar and did a few more errands for Sunny. Killed some scorps at the cemetery. Got 50 caps and a few bullets.
12.19
Good day today. Saw Kara and she was conscious and alert. We spent hours just talking. She didn’t remember most of what happened after she was shot. I filled her in in what going on and how I’ve got a place to stay here. She had this goofy kinda smile on her face the whole time I was describing Goodsprings. God I just realized how much i love that smile.
12.20
I gave her the prosthetic and a crutch I bought from Chet. She’s having some difficulty moving around but she managed to get to the house. She immediately went to bed and fell asleep pretty quickly.
12.21
She woke up around noon-ish and was absolutely starving. She pretty much emptied the fridge, which was only some gecko and some cola. So I spent the rest of the 50 caps on some wine, fresh Brahmin, and fresh potatoes and corn. Cooking the veggies was easy enough but the meat I fucked up. It was burnt on one side but it’s still edible. Dinner was pretty good but I didn’t really pay attention to the food. Kara looked absolutely stunning now that she had clean clothes and had taken a shower. Dinner was nice. When I went to help her to her room she gave me a kiss on the cheek then smiled and said goodnight. Goddamn this is amazing. I think I love her.
