Strap in lads this is a long one. Get rid of your screenshot of the Colombian wonderkid you fancy, put the old fella back in your pants and settle in for a nice long story about a fictional reality I’m more invested in than your girlfriend is in Love Island.
This is the story of how I took my created team "Auldhouse Football Club" from the Scottish League 2 to Champions League winners in the space of 10 seasons. A little background, I had previously attempted making teams in the editor but I had always half arsed it and gave up fairly quickly into the save, similar to my attempts to turn my Peep Show slash fiction into a working screenplay. This time I did it properly though, I made a badge, I made kits, but sadly found out you can’t edit the club mascot so abandoned my Alex Salmond themed plushie.
I decided I would start the club in the Scottish League 2 and based the club in my local park in Glasgow. Newlands Park stadium started out as a 50,000 all seater stadium although would later be expanded by the board to 62,648 to make it the largest stadium in Scotland. The RP I created was a disgruntled billionaire (aren’t they all) decided to break the domination of “The Old Firm” and bring about the era of “The Auld Firm” so pumped more money into the team than skag Pete Doherty pumps into his bumole.
With 200 million in the bank and enough good boyfriend stock saved up to ignore the missus for a few months I set off on my goal to take this team of McDonalds store room staff rejects to the Champions League trophy and put Scotland back on the footballing map much to Dave Murray’s chagrin.

I begin my first season choosing to just generate regens to create the team. As I had given the team a £200 million transfer kitty I thought it only fair for balance to start with younger lads and only improve the team in the game with transfers and development. As I had given the team top facilities I was able to generate some great players who stayed with the team for a number seasons. Some of these early standouts included the one-time record goal scorer Martin Barbour, a dependable AM in Ken McLaren, first team LB for a good number of years Will Moses and last but certainly not least the clubs current record appearance holder with 256 league appearances and more Glaswegian fanny seen to than a Govan gynaecologist – Barry Edward. Barry is the only player still currently in the squad from the first season and with his 71 caps for Scotland to go along with his massive trophy cabinet is surely be the most successful Scottish player since Derek Riordan. I quickly realised that despite my huge war chest and max reputation I could not attract any special players to come play in League 2 despite glamour ties such as Montrose and Forfar so settled on a handful of talented British youngsters including Fraser Murray, Lee Muirhead and Jack Grimmer who went on to be serviceable squad players. The stand out player I bought would be RW Declan McDaid from Ayr who went on to be player of the season and is still a fan favourite despite not spending too long at the club. Unsurprisingly I romped the league with 90 goals scored, 24 against and 92 points overall. My first foray in the Scottish Cup was a shock as I made it all the way to the final but sadly got beat 2-1 by Hibs. League cup was not so great as I got put out in the first-round group stage but like you told yourself after your high school sweetheart broke up with you, “I wasn’t even bothered anyway”. I’m still not sure to this day what exactly the Irn Bru cup is apart from a guaranteed trophy for my U20 team these days but suffice to say I got to the semi-final. Overall it was a job well done but bigger challengers would surely lie ahead in the tougher league 1…
2018/2019 Season

It turns out League 1 was fairly easy. 116 GF, 29 GA and finishing on 99 points the rapid rise up the Scottish footballing pyramid was proving easier that your sister after 4 wkds. The Scottish cup ended up in defeat against Auldhouse’s most competitive(shocking) rivals, Celtic. This would be the first of many tricky encounters with the hoops over the decade but their dominance would not last forever like the USSR or institutional racism. The Auldies dominance of the League cup however was in full swing with a 2nd round exit this year, a vast improvement on the year before. Mickey mouse cup. Apparently, I also won the Glen’s Vodka Irn Bru Cup. The scenes! Transfer wise I was able to stretch my (gout ridden) legs a bit more with total spent on players being £5.75m. Standouts from the bunch included Mauro Junior, a Brazilian AM, Ryan Christie from Celtic who did good things for the club, Lewis Vaughan from Raith who dominated the left wing and one of my biggest bargains, Scott Tough for 9.5k from Alloa who turned into a 5-star staring RB and perennial Scottish national team player. Best players of the season were the front trio of Lewis Vaugan, Islam Feruz and Siriki Dembele who scored more than Michael Jackson at Neverland. Again, I stressed to the lads to not get complacent as we headed in to the championship as surely now we were about to face some real competition.
2019/2020 Season

This was the season we arrived as a new force in Scottish football. We won every competition we entered. The squad was given a massive overhaul as I finally seemed able to attract some seriously talented youngsters from around the world and I splashed out on what would be the clubs record transfer for 7+ years. The Championship was won at a canter with 97 points accumulated. Won the Scottish Cup for the 1st of the 8 times we have won the cup beating Rangers (arch rivals/whipping boys) and Celtic on the way to the Trophy. We still didn’t care about the league cup but won it just for something to do. Irn-Bru decided to just give us the cup at the start of the season and save everyone else the trouble of losing to us. Winning the cup also meant we would play in Europe for the first time as we qualified for the Europa League for the first time. The boys dreamed of playing Bate Borisov away on a Tuesday night just like their papas had told them about. As I said, transfers were kicked up a notch this season. £99m spent overall which was half my budget at the time which had not been added to due to the tiny sums offered out for winning trophies. Immediately you are thinking £65m for Phil Foden (55 upfront, 10 in add ons)? To which I say, man love is a very complex and nuanced subject. Being starved of any real activity the 1st 2 seasons this was more what I had imagined when giving the team £200m to spend. I wanted my world class wonderkids and no one could stop me (unless you are called financial fair play, more on that later) A lot of these players were first team members of the squad for a long time, winning plenty of trophies in the meantime. Pedro Chirivella was a Spanish deep lying playmaker with lots of style, Lautaro Lopez was one in a long line of excellent South American CB’s this great club has had, Jack Harrison and Bersant Celina from Man City went straight into the starting line-up as left and right inside forwards and Kamil Grabara held the no 1 Jersey for the season. Special mention here goes to a player bought in the Jan transfer window, Karamoko Conde. A club legend who is easily one of the clubs most talented players ever. Now starting up front for Bayern Munich and coming runner up in world footballer of the year to another player we will come on to, I’ll always have a place in my heart for the French condom. Many of the new signings went straight into the best 11 but special mention goes to Auldhouse lad Martin Barbour for scoring 39 goals in 37 appearances and the American Jack Harrison who racked up 21 assists and a 7.62 avg rating across the season whilst nearly allowing the nation to forgive the USA for giving the world the Tangerine Temper Tantrum. Finally, the club were into the world wide renowned league The Ladbrokes Premiership, watched by over 17 fans every weekend. The first 3 seasons climbing the lower leagues were fond times for the club’s fans as they ate salmonella ridden food in stadiums where one stand was mainly hedgerow but the ultimate test now lay on the horizon, could they survive in the world toughest top flight?

Turned out the premiership was not as big a challenge as it seemed. Actually, if I’m being honest this was the first season the team were properly tested. Although we won the league it was only by 1 point and it was from Celtic dropping points in the final old firm game. Celtic did get some revenge by beating me 2-0 in the League cup final. Scottish Cup was business as usual beating Hamilton 4-0 in the final. The big disappointment of the season was the Euro Cup (Europa League). The first foray into Europe for the lads came in the 3rd qualifying round where we were unlucky to draw Tottenham (who would go on to be somewhat of a European rival for us). We drew 2-2 at Newlands park but sadly got beat 2-1 away. Overall, I was not too disappointed as I knew they were a much better side who should be beating us and really we were hard done by the draw. Another season of heavy transfer spending this season although I tried to spread the money over more players instead of spunking it up the wall on one. This was also the first season that anyone of any significance left the club. Mauro Junior, Jack Grimmer and Adam King left the club having done their job of helping us move up the leagues but now not up to the first team standard. Incomings again included several club legends. Luciano Fontana is the starting RB to this day and despite Chelsea trying to sign him every window the guy is a legend. Diego Lainez and Patrick Roberts (on a free) have been great wingers for the club up to present day. They have not always been 1st team but the kind of useful idiots team players who you can convince they don’t need too much playing time. Emmanuel Baruwa replaced Grabara as the no.1 and did a great job in goals for a number of years. Roland Sallai was the backup AM to Phil Foden for a long time and scored a lot of important goals in his time with us. Carles Alena was a brilliant CM but sadly Bayern Munich pinched him off me the next season so did not get the best out of him. Last but not least is a man who I love more than most real-life people. He is the regen you all wish you could tell your work colleagues about but are scared of being publicly ostracised. Carlos Villalba was signed from Rosario for 9.5m which in hindsight was a bargain. Initially loaned back to Rosario for a season he has gone on to be the clubs greatest ever player, record goal scorer and all-round boner inducing striker. “Villy” has gone on to win World Player of the Year 3 times to go along with a horde of other awards. Basically, he is to Auldhouse what Charlie Sheen is to cocaine dealers. Best players from that season included Conde scoring 31 goals, Patrick Roberts with 19 goals and 7.49 rating along with the two CB’s Lopez and Adarabioyo. So, after the boys tasting their first real test at the club I was certain we had a solid foundation to go on and dominate domestic football whilst finally getting a chance to test the lads in the worlds greatest competition besides the British Indoor Bowls Championship, The Champions League. Could the money spent so far payoff against Europe’s elite teams…
2021/2022 Season

I know what you are thinking, but apparently there isn’t an option in the game to send anthrax to Uefa’s offices. The good train lollypop took a very significant detour this season. Firstly, I found out you can’t pay £200 million + in transfer fees with an income similar to your local pound shop branch and not fall afoul of FFP. I had known from the season previously that I was not going to pass FFP and I really had no idea how I was going get back into Europe. I had made a loss of about £150 million more than I was allowed to so I seriously considered abandoning the save. I decided to soldier on hoping for a miracle but subsequently I only bought one player whilst selling a host of others. The game punished me for this domestically. Celtic improved whilst I stood still so whilst they did get over 100 points in the league I was not close enough to them finishing 10 points back. Both the cup finals also ended in defeat to Celtic giving them the domestic treble. Whilst this was by far my worst season credit did go to Celtic for an amazing year. This was the last year Brendan Rodgers managed them before being poached by Real Madrid. As I said transfers were mostly outgoings this season for obvious reasons. The one player I signed for the 1st team has went on to be a great servant for the club. CB Goran Vasiljevic is still a starting CB for me and is perpetually coveted by the Special Wun at Man U. My profanity laden tirades in the media are yet to put Mourinho off. I recouped nearly £40m in sales mostly made up by aforementioned sale of Carles Alena to Bayern which I really didn’t want to do but pressure from the player and the finances meant I did not really have a choice. Thankfully most of the other sales were mostly 2nd and 3rd choice options at their position and I sold quite a few of the academy lads who would never be good enough for me but have gone on to be good players in SPFL. Despite the poor results there were a lot of great seasons from some players. Villalba’s first season upfront saw him score a decent 26 goals. The 3 behind the striker all had great seasons with particular praise going to the Mexican Diego Lainez who scored as nearly as many as he assisted in his one of his best seasons for the club. Auldhouse lad Barry “bazza” Edwards “eddy” was the standout defender. This was when I started trying to balance having 3 great strikers in Villalba, Conde and Barbour which was very tricky with a 1 striker system. Later on, you will see I had to abandon this to keep them happy. So, it’s fair to say this was a low point for the club. I had to reign in what I expected to be guaranteed domestic excellence and wonder if I would ever get the chance to achieve my original goal of winning the Champs League…
2022/2023 Season

Let’s get the big question out of the way. This game made me seriously reconsider my atheism and whether attempting to copulate with my pc was a good idea. So essentially at the end of the previous season when getting the usual annual reports on tax bills and sponsorship deals I got an email that said the club had signed a new sponsorship deal worth £145m???? I have never had this happen before in the game and I would love to know if anyone else has ever had this. I did have my owner set to Sugar Daddy but I still to this day have no idea how this happened. It meant I now had made just enough profit over the season to pass the FFP rules. After several cartwheels and half a bottle of vodka I set about having a decent attempt at the Europe’s top competition and boy did I. Getting to the final on the first attempt I will gladly accept is some of the greatest luck I have had in the years playing this game. After finishing 2nd in the group behind Liverpool but in front of Barcelona! (who on a side note have not really done much in my save) and Leverkusen I would have already been happy with going that far. You can see here the rest of the competition where I beat Chelsea, PSG and Bayern on the way to getting beat in the final by Man City. I really could not be too disappointed at the defeat as I got so much further than I expected. In the league I was much better this season although I feel that had as much to do with Rogers leaving Celtic from which they have never been the same challenge again. Won the Scottish cup and was beat in the final of the always pesky League Cup. Did not spend a lot on transfers as I was still short of money at this point but the 4 players I did sign are still in the 1st team to this day. Ramirez, Lefebvre and Matsipa became the main CM rotation after I let the others go. Saracchi is a complete wing back who still plays for the team today. Significant departures were Jack Harrison after requesting a transfer and Academy graduate and record goal scorer Martin Barbour after complaining about playing time. Most other sales were to get a positive cashflow going. Usual suspects for the best 11 including 36 goals for Villalba, both wingers having great seasons again and Conde having a great avg rating as the second striker. Winning the champions league was very nearly achieved sooner than expected so from here on out I expected nothing less than to win it within the coming seasons if not straight away. With further investment in the club I’d look to do just that…
2023/2024 Season

This was the first in a pattern repeated for many seasons. Domestic Treble – Knocked out in later stages of champions league. This section of the story I have titled “A tribute to Peter Jackson’s Hobbit Trilogy” i.e. repetitive and not much happens. Champions League started well finishing 2nd in the group to eventual winners Juventus and beating out old foes Tottenham and Leverkusen to the loser spots. After a famous 5-3 victory against Real Madrid in the first knockout round I was beaten by everyone’s favourite OP team, Mourinho’s United. You can see the tree here. Not disheartened the lads rallied to win the domestic treble although only beating Celtic by 3 points after a frustrating number of draws. The purse strings were loosened again this season after the previous seasons European money however of all the players purchased this season the best was the free transfer of German winger Mikulic, a 5-star player who starts every big game. Sadly, most of the other big signings did not stay at the club for too long after being pinched by some bigger teams. This was also the season I finally had enough cash to dip into the under 18 markets with more glee than Gary Glitter’s hard drive. I started heavily scouting the regens and signing 15 and 16-year olds to then come to the club when they turn 18. A lot of these players are now in my youth ranks with a few with real potential to become great players. Only one outgoing player but for £25m. Celina had been a great servant for the club but now 3rd in the pecking order on the RW and getting an offer that high was impossible to refuse. Nearly a goal a game saw Conde beat Villalba into the best 11 for the season despite less appearances. Patrick Roberts again had an excellent season with avg rating of 7.88. Overall the new signings also had good years. Not much to say about this season as really the minimum I was expecting at this point. I just hoped I could progress in Europe next year…
2024/2025 Season

Déjà vu this season with the exact same result on paper. Finished second again in the group stages after again coming up against Tottenham although they bettered me this time. Knockout stages here. Decent ties against Roma then saw me frustratingly go out on penalties to Chelsea. I have seen others say penalties are tough in this version of FM and I agree. My two world class strikers have less than 10 on penalties and I have had to sign a player recently specifically to have a penalty taker with a decent bit of talent. League was much more straight forward, winning by 21 points. You are bored of hearing about the cups now aren’t you? A great deal of activity in and out this season. I sold LW Renato Augusto when I realised I could buy Lois De Vos who was arguably the best LW in the game at that point with amazing stats. £41m was by far the most I had spent on a player since Phil Foden and I was very happy with the result. Brasil went straight into the starting 11 at CB and I uncovered a real gem in Sarue who plays as the deep lying playmaker with defensive duties in the current starting 11. The other significant departure was CB Lopez who was a great servant but demanded to leave when Monaco approached to sign him. Most other singings were youngsters. Improving every year, Villalba scored better than a goal a game for 43 in total. Other standouts were Lainez at LW, Lefebvre at CM and Vasilevic at CB. And so, waking up to Sonny and Cher in Punxsutawney I somehow had to think how I would escape this endless mediocre loop of European quarter finals…
2025/2026 Season

Time to drive of the cliff. I actually won the group this year with a perfect 6 for 6 record beating out, you guessed it, Tottenham into 2nd place. Sadly, the knockout round went as planned getting beat by a very good Bayern side 4-1 on aggregate. I started to think I might just not have what it takes. I needed a Rocky style montage to save me from this hell. I used Sam and the Womp instead of Eye of the Tiger though. League was won by 20 points again. I didn’t even look up who I beat in the cups. Before going to transfers here I should talk about something I haven’t really mentioned up to this point. Are you aware of our lord and saviour Jesus Christ? No seriously, I know you know who Scott Brown is so I’ll move on to my actual discussion which is tactics. Up until this point I had been playing with the exact same formation since league two which was some variation on this. It was with this season and my repeated frustration I started to experiment with some different tactics to combat the threats in Europe. These included swapping the AM for a DM in a more defensive set up and another of playing both Conde and Villalba up front together to try to get my 11 best players on the park at the same time. With that in mind I had to go buy a DM as I had no players who could play the role. I bought talented but young Anchor Man Alfredo Santa Maria from River Plate thinking that he would be happy with the minimal playing time being that I would have no use for him in league. I also bought a new AM in Castillo as I thought long time servants Foden and Sallai were deteriorating. I raked in a record transfer income of £95m but to be honest I regret selling some of these players. Becerra and Basioli are still top players in the game and in hindsight I could have tried to hold on to them more despite them moaning about going to play in a bigger league. I also let go Scottish RB Scott Tough for £10m after originally signing him for an astronomical £9.5k. I really needed to break this cycle now. If I did not get past the quarters this season the PC would be going to the local Oxfam…
2026/2027 Season

Sadly, the charity shop around the corner did not get a significant IT upgrade but the lads still fell short for a fourth year in row. I have played this game since FM13 and I can honestly say getting beat on penalties in the semi-final against Bayern was the most heart-breaking defeat I have had in this game. After a phenomenal season from almost every player I thought for sure this was going to be the year. Losing 3-0 away only to score 3 goals at home to take it to extra time I watched as we missed chance after chance in extra time and then knew it was over as soon as it went to pens. I did not start the next season for a good couple of weeks after this game I was so gutted. Then I remembered like all those brave neckbeards before me I had to continue playing a game in a fictional reality for real world validation. League was won by 30 points this time with only 1 defeat. Cups were also played. Major transfer of this season was the replacing of No.1 Emmanuel Baruwa after a £25m bid from Juventus. I had had my eye on young Dutchman Van Der Pluijm as probably the best young keeper in the game so when I realised I could sign him for effectively £3.5m I went for it. I missed “barry” in between the sticks but Van the Man has proved a worthy successor. More talented young guys came in this season having been bought in previous seasons. The standouts being Argentinian Wonderkid Complete Forward Angel Bernardi and my current starting AM Danilo. A few other fan favourites went out the door this season in Phil Foden and Roland Sallai. I have a soft spot for both these guys having been with the team since the Championship days but sadly with declining performances and me playing an AM less and less I decided to let them go get first team play elsewhere. Despite our great love affair, I would never again get to Phil Foden. Interesting note, I spend exactly how much I took in from this window in £64m. It’s really hard to pick out the best players from this year as you can see from the best 11, almost every position had a great player. Van Der Pluijm got off to a great start in goals, the back 4 all had excellent ratings including stalwart captain Barry Edwards. Great showings from all 4 CM rotations and wonderful seasons from the 4 wingers with special praise going to club legend Lainez with 7.97 rating. The now two back up strikers of Conde and new boy Bernardi both had what would normally be player of the season performances with averages over 7.85 but no one gets the Auldies fans dicks quite as hard as the Argentinian Annihilator Carlos Villalba with a ridiculous 59 goals and 8.01 avg rating earning him World Player of the year awards and the Golden Boot. Not bad for a player in the Scottish Premiership. A tough off season was now ahead of me. Did I stick with the team that was so close or did I try to change things to secure that elusive Champions League Trophy. 2027/2028 Season

Those beautiful amazing lads. They bloody did it. LOOK AT THAT. That’s right we won the Betfred Cup again! No, seriously I stayed up to 1:40 am on a work night to play that final and I was so stupidly chuffed to finally achieve my goal. I have played countless saves of this manager sim and I can easily say I have never had such an emotional investment as I have had in this team and this victory sealed a save that I will remember until my next blackout. Beating PSG, Juventus and Chelsea on the way to the final to play yes you guessed it, (come on lads its) Tottenham Hotspur. Two goals from God’s servant on earth Villalba put this club into the history books. To answer my previous question, I decided to make some quite brutal changes risking the harmony of the squad by selling some very big players along with a totally new tactical system to get the best out of the team. I set the team up with this 4-4-2 with generally that starting line-up apart from a few changes throughout the season based on form. I have never used a 4-4-2 for any length of time in any FM game as far as I can remember but a few things made me change. Firstly, I noticed most of the teams I was playing in the later stages of the CL were using some variation on it so it must have had some advantages. Secondly, I decided to replace De Vos with Kai Ginczek at LW breaking my transfer record for the German wonderkid at £66m. Ridiculously talented but was only natural as an inverted winger further down the pitch. I decided to go all in on him and moved Mikulic back from the front line on the right-hand side which he was more comfortable with anyway so already improving my best possible 11. I decided to embrace the two-striker system and bought Advanced Forward Hakan Oygur from Man City to play alongside Villalba with Bernardi backing them up. He also had 15 pen taking finally meaning I had someone to rely on to take pens regularly. Overall this system worked great, allowing me to score a bag full of goals but more importantly be more solid at the back as I was not pushing so many guys forward. Other signings included a Portuguese wonderkid T. Correia who I was able to get on a free and had some great games off the bench and Reynaldo Cesar who was one of the starting CB’s with a potential rating of 4.5 stars. More significant were the players who left the club. A record income from player sales of £144m saw heavy hitters of Mario Brasil, Castillo and De Vos leave ultimately not because they were bad but that I though I could get better and I did. It was with great sadness though I said goodbye to someone who in spite of me saying it about 40 players so far truly is a club legend, Karamoko Conde. 158 League goals and countless lady’s underwear ruined from excessive fan splooshing he left after requesting to challenge for the Champions League. Despite the irony, I still love the guy.
And so, children, my mission was over. What does the future hold for the team that went from Scottish League two to the best in the world? Next season we will try to win all 6 competitions we enter including the Club World Cup and the Super Cup. I have some exceptional youngsters waiting to join the team who I hope to bring along to become club legends in their own right. I would also like to expand the stadium and even have it named after me. I have already decided I will play the save until Barry Edwards retires as I feel that will be the sun setting on a golden generation. Overall, I learned I have far too much time on my hands and it’s not wise to remote access your home pc when I should be working to play FM.
